I am as is quite obvious I'm disabled I'm a of a a type known as aosst or an aoid and this means in Practical terms that I have considerable difficulty with the uh coordination of movement in Limbs and and joints [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] right that's enough let for you in this man got Chinese I've recently taken up this new Post in the home office program learning unit at the fire service technical college to this end I fairly frequently find myself on the training ground looking at practical training me sort of um teenage years are the ones which are most difficult for for anybody and I think this is particular this was particularly so for me because I can remember most vividly sitting in my room at hand watching people and my people I mean young people working out together arm in arm and I felt extremely bit about my own problems in my own situation [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] I think my my parents attitude was not so much they were absolutely against marriage they weren't although perhaps my father was more they weren't against it because they didn't approve of Jonah in fact anyone who knows my wife can't fail to to ADM but um it wasn't that at all they felt that it would be a tremendous train on both us [Music] mom put this that afterwards this by the other thing [Music] anywhere Mom I don't think there's anything in at the moment it is [Music] empty okay fine [Applause] F my mother always said oh you'll get married one day whether she really believed this I don't know but she always told me I would get married one day no reason in the world why I shouldn't get married and I had had several boyfriends a boded and disabled and you know I they just wondered how he would cope but of course really I think we've C very well um I think the story is same as any any normal people you go you go somewhere socially and you see somebody who takes your eye and you feels perhaps you you like to see more of them you engineer and thought until you do see more of that person for 40 school children when their bus plunged down a 25t embankment into a shallow River and after yesterday's accident Chaos on Britain's font bound meure ways which involved over 100 Vehicles the minister of Transport has had some sharp words for drivers when you see somebody say it's absolutely essential to realize that that person has the same emotional requirement as a noral a normal person in fact if you take it away the Twisted Limbs and the peculiar facial expressions then underneath he is in fact a normal person and he has the same the same sexual appeti as as anyone else and he needs love I'm not refer fing to a crafty bit of petting in the dark or anything like that but he he he's capable and indeed he must have um sexual fulfillment [Music] [Applause] [Applause] you ready J there we are did you hear Jody walking in the night no didn't you you must have slept very [Music] [Applause] [Music] well morning Janice how are you today better no bumps this week right I'll take it out all thank [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] morning thank you for your letter morning [Applause] I surprised when I was young could [Music] [Applause] natur win good one okay on the Strand we got the strand you want to buy strand [Music] 50 not enough come on 220 it says over there not the way you spend it you want to half friend or full FR she doesn't want to party and do J [Applause] I hopeck you up now oh she stuck up [Music] anyway I this job on my holiday last year didn't I where did you go for your holidays oh this was at beex Hill and um it's run by the council really for old people but they had a young handicap who went there oh yes and um and you both went together yeah and used to go out for a drink of a night and come back late and the maton used to have all snacks waiting for us about 11:00 at night very nice and um it's quite good really you know I wish we could do that again try to hold your head too down there are you comfortable there [Applause] I start to talk to for Hi how are you it nice to see you [Music] hello how's it going M food food [Music] would you like no don't don't be misery oh you don't know that one about the the chat that went off the diving B to oh that was funny I was sunbathing on the diving board and this athletic sort of chat comes towards me and I could see he like Peter he death he makes to dive and quar of an hour later he's still making to dive so I said to him aren't you going in it's lovely warm in there you know so he's he smiled at me so I said now look when I counted up to three in you go counted up to three made a perfect dive into the pool one minute later he still had an AB honey couldn't [Music] swim just look and the I no come on now everybody one two three and four come on girls round the go that's the idea come on now keep going your KNE your KNE come on come on come on go oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well it was a it was a great disappointment we when we first found out about Michael being and he started these exercises and I used to say to my wife oh by the time he's 13 or 14 he' be all right but I I really didn't believe it myself but I always used to say that just to more or less back the wife that it's just same as my husband said we thought he might get you know grow out of it but as a thing I think it got more known then you hear of other children being born and it was it just hit you then that they may never grow out of it but they could be helped I can remember some excises and uh one of them was L on the table and just ly flat moving your arms and legs about side to side and uh stretching and nailing and bending but for four times same time that's how I remember I just remember guy there was trying to give your was trying to give his uh damaged part of the brain a pattern to follow because the part the normal pattern of the brain was damaged and he's been taught to do this pattern so help him way explained to us was that a part of the brain wasn't developed at birth that controlled certain muscles in the body whereas a normal person would automatically put his hand out to pick up something and with Michael's case it was a a snatch movement of a grab at first but gradually with these exercises it improved and I think that's how the easiest way to explain it how how it was explained to me [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] when Michael was five he went to a ordinary Junior School in Battery Park Road um do you remember anything about that uh I remember qu but always come coming in class last and um getting picked on this a bit this the old one in the in the class perhaps you exaggerate a bit H perhaps you exaggerated a bit I thought I know that I know that for sure [Music] [Music] pleas well I left I left there after me well that was 11 plus they didn't expect you to pass any any uh 11 and I went to C second just go there and and uh you stayed there till you were 16 eh you stayed there till you were 16 there I was I was in the bottom class I and the to L in there I move to another class cuz it was not listening to the teach is saying and he always comes up to me and gives me a CL on the knuckles with a ruler that's when you should have paid attention you deserved it because they said you got the intelligence but and I was sitting off in the middle of a r I'm sorry for and said to me come sit in front of me in the Des I'll be s in the ever since yeah you sure it wasn't for to be near to keep eye on I was the nearest one near we have to get up and give me yeah I didn't mind that it just kept me right but Michael he the teacher did say that you'd got the brain to um further your education if you'd use it properly yes and pay attention I think the first thing that might interested in the war was that TV series and it shows you a lot of fascinating film of uh Martin in the airc which at that time or even more advanced to come out uh I've had quite a few J middle couple of knives hav got them there got rid of them and uh again back it didn't really have uh many friends but we used to take him out as much as we could um he I was friends with another person that had a plastic girl and we used to go along the road but it was really um heartbreaking to go along the road at times people used to turn around and stare not just one stare used to stare until you were out of sight you know followed you I remember over time instead so everybody well everybody always stares at me you think they're staring cuz you're staring back at [Applause] now well a long time ago I I used used to go to places in clubs very lot of times and I've stop going it's a very good reason people just don't want to know you cuz they think you fre or anything like that and uh what what one person says what another person is they come to the conclusion that either that or or anything like that this a situation well some situations is just give you an example if an area full of white people and and a kind of person walk in what would you think I say you can give it you can have no idea yourself but I would say time toess you noral person [Laughter] I'm not going up to sh it all right count on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] my ambition now is to be like a normal person and I'm still I hope the S will come across a solution to this problem and to me this out of theary and sometimes it will happen I'm just waiting for and if I would like just to football just like good Bobby ch e
