more of study and lectures on departmental rules and regulations criminal law rules of arrest traffic rules and court procedures he learned to use all types of firearms and spent many hours in target practice marksmanship might someday mean saving his own life and the lives of other people he learned the importance of first aid and the diagnosis of civil injuries knowledge that often means the difference between life and death for an injured person in commando practice cadet officers learn how a group of men working as one can be an effective wedge between destructive mobs and the peaceful citizen and his property Joe with other cadets found our modern scientific crime detection speeds the work of every department the machine they are watching is a spectrograph one of the newest and would earn the right to wear that uniform permanently he was now officer Joe his dream was a scout car of his own but he didn't mind being assigned special detail work he'd let him into strange places the world outside their yard is life and discover it's pretty big and confusing when mother isn't there yes Joe got to know his area pretty thoroughly he forgot about wanting to be a hero there were plenty of other compensation of course there were dozens of times when he had to do things that weren't Pleasant like giving a ticket to someone Park willfully in a no parking zone but it was all a part of his job it was a long time in coming but he was finally assigned to a two-way radio car car 88 it meant a great deal to it a successful step in his career he met the man who was to be his partner and experienced patrolman from whom he could learn a great deal car 88 was a part of a carefully planned system devised for the patrolling of the city of Detroit every hour of the day and nights here's how the system works the city of Detroit is divided into police precincts each precinct is divided into scout car territories the number depending upon the size of the precinct and the amount of activity in that precinct the two men who transmitted orders to scout cars the radio dispatcher and the dispatch clerk are always veterans of many years experience in police work they must decide in a few seconds what course of action should be taken on a call they must know every minute what cars are available for assignments Joe seldom saw those men but their voices became a part of fingers on the pulse of a gigantic heartbeat this little part of the city that it was his job to protect Joe and his scout car partner worked as a close team for each other's protection for they never knew when an assignment no matter how it sounded would turn into something vicious and dangerous 84 and 88 2136 West forest at the payroll office pulled up in progress in emergencies like this all those months of training and experience begin to pay off Joe reported by radio that the holdup men had been taken into custody but not before Joe's partner had been injured by gunfire West Side security patrol and eight sergeants 2136 West Forest an officer shot wagon on the way that started Joe thinking his own partner wounded in line of duty sooner or later it always happens to some friend in the department Joe understood now by policemen were considered bad insurance risks he was thinking of his partner's family and of his own the Joe as to his partner in all patrolling it meant a great deal to know that the police department would see that they and their families were taken care of in the event anything happened he thought about that when he was asked to take part in the police field day which is held each year to raise funds to supplement the insurance of least when feel they arrived as many officers as can be relieved from duty donate their time and services to make
