THERE ARE NO STRANGERS

[Applause] this is John Daly today I'm going to bring you a special kind of news I'm going to talk to you about Newark Irvington and West Hudson New Jersey and about people we sometimes think of as strangers because you are in this area would not be news to tell you a prosperous it is that it's one of the most concentrated industrial areas in the whole world but it may be news to many of you to learn just how your community is set up to serve your health your recreation and your general welfare seventy-five voluntarily supported agencies are devoted to the welfare of those people we call strangers and needless to say a great deal of money is required to pay for their services that is why we are asking you now to support the United Appeals Red Cross fund with all you can afford so you may get an idea of what some of these agencies do for you and how thoroughly integrated into your community they are we're going to introduce you to one of the agency workers we thought that by photographing her as she makes her daily contacts you'd have a good view of some of the wonderful care and consideration you make available to all when you give the United Way we want you to meet Miss Virginia Bishop hello there I'm a professional registered nurse and a member of the staff of the Visiting Nurse Association of Newark you're probably familiar with the uniform we wear and the black bag we carry our supplies in is a sort of trademark which identifies visiting nurses everywhere this morning we received a rather urgent telephone request for a visitor's in my district the woman sounded so distressed but our director put it first on my list of calls for the day when I arrived at the home I found a woman with her hands full three small children and a sick father who couldn't work no wonder the woman sounded stressed over the telephone the man was obviously in need of medical and hospital services in addition to putting in a call to the family physician I gave the data to the information and referral service of a welfare Federation which made arrangements for the attention this man needed I thought this pretty well solve this family's difficulties but I learned later that to add to their troubles a fire had wiped out their home fortunately your community is prepared to such misfortunes it supports the Salvation Army emergency shelter a welcome home a roof over their heads for just such families and distress this is one of the agencies you help maintain when you give to the United Appeals Red Cross fund your agencies offer their help throughout the lifespan from infancy to old age this young resident was born in Beth Israel Hospital the mother attended the free hospital clinic for a prenatal care and because of your consideration this little citizen is getting a good start in life hospitals are institutions which most of us take for granted when we need them we expect them to be available to us but did you know that most hospitals could not even exist without voluntary support the fees they charges while they may seem large at the time do not nearly meet the operating costs and actually few of us could afford hospital care if we would charge the total expense of the services you and your community must make up the deficit you do that through the United appeals and that is why ten hospitals in your area participate in it while this mother was in the hospital baby's oldest sister was taken care of by one of the nine day nurseries which you support apparently she thought I had brought the new baby in a little black bag in my work I circulate in the community a great deal and I have been a witness to your thoughtfulness in every phase of it in Home for the Aged is that of the Little Sisters of the Poor you have remembered the old in your area just as we all are aware of our debt to our parent your community has arranged for care and company and consideration for those in their later years while they may be old in years they are encouraged to keep it will be comforting to you to learn that your community is well organized to handle all kinds of social problems and believe me as I can tell you from firsthand experience sometimes they are pretty complicated in this family for example there is a 15 year old girl and two boys 11 and 13 full of mischief some of you may consider three children complication off the mother had broken her leg in a fall and had just returned from Presbyterian Hospital her activity was more limited now the children needed more attention and guidance than she could give them alone she therefore appeal to the Visiting Nurse Association for help so I had come out to teach her crutch walking there is a Mac and shifting ones weight forward and backward so as to avoid the possibility of falling I explained the exercises to the daughter of the family too so she could help see that her mother use a technique while I could advise and assist the family on its health problems I couldn't correct the entire situation here this also appeared to be a case for the Family Service Bureau so I suggested that she call for its assistance most family service health is given to people who visit the agency office where problems can be discussed free from interference and distracting influences in this unusual case however the Family Service Bureau made an exception to the rule because the mother's broken leg is severely restricted her mobility the counselor has come to the house for consultation like a doctor the counselor was quick to spot the family social maladjustment his description was to help the family find the means of binding its members closer together one such means was teamwork in budgeting the Family Dollar to capture the interest of the children and to encourage them to help out comic books on stretching did the trick there was still another complication in this family it concerned the father who was somewhat addicted to gambling while his income was average his losses were taking too large a share of it this was a delicate matter for the family service counselor of course he would enlist the aid of the family clergyman but more immediately he could suggest wholesome outside interests for the children there is no reason why the daughter should not be enjoying the absorbing activities of the Girl Scouts as your daughters do there is no reason why these healthy youngsters should not join the 26,000 other children between the ages of 9 and 16 in this area who enjoy the facilities and leadership given by the 16 youth organizations you support through United Appeals the transformation was remarkable this is the type of preventive care and thought by which we can combat juvenile delinquency your United appeals makes every effort to keep youngsters busy and off the streets because as we all know trouble has a way of catching up with idleness last year one-fourth of the calls I made were on heart patient this housewife will soon be on her feet again though thanks to a miracle of cardiac surgery performed at st. Michael's Hospital here is being executed the remarkable surgical technique called cardio revascularisation a means of feeding fresh blood new nutrition to a dying heart this is one of the developments the Essex County Heart Association has helped make possible with grants to further research in surgical education and to provide the care and treatment which could put heart patients back to work you helped win the battle against heart disease with your United appeals donation and you helped make the recovery period easier - I passed the information on this case along and arrangements were soon made for the Essex County Service for the chronically ill to assist in the management of this patient's home one of the more dramatic over more than 20 services of the Red Cross in this area is the blood donor program the Red Cross recruits donors and collects their blood as is being done here at the crucible steel plant in Harrison which is not only stockpiled on the county blood bank but in life-or-death emergencies may be rushed to our hospitals to fill an urgent need and save a life as a contributor to the United appeals Red Cross you are helping pay the cost of this humanitarian work you are helping to when your dollars reach out to our armed forces throughout the world to provide a home away from home in the US oh another important task is outpatient treatment in the home this is Cathy a little girl who has recently come home from the Cystic any treatment center for infantile paralysis they did a good job for her there our Visiting Nurse Association physical therapist is now attending her and Cathy is going to be alright did you know that the actual hospital cost of polio treatment is 65 dollars a day could you afford that cerebral palsy is another very expensive condition to treat brain damage usually at birth has robbed its victims of some of their muscular control they need help lots of it and parents doctors nurses teachers all must work hand in hand once a week the Red Cross picks up Patricia and takes her to the cerebral palsy Center for further treatment imagine if you can the frustration of knowing that you want to take a step forward yet not being able to command the muscles which make that step possible this is a plight and the fight of these little victims of cerebral palsy they must try and keep trying and never give up some must have braces to help them in the attempt it takes time and more time and patience and guidance patient care of this kind takes money but thanks to your understanding many of these victims are able to assume a normal place in society [Music] you [Music] you have seen only a small sample the unselfish services performed by the health and welfare agencies of Newark Irvington and West Hudson which participate in the United Appeals Red Cross I wish you could accompany me on my visits for about a week to see the increasing number of cases and the problems that arise each day but the wonderful thing is that you support the community services that are organized to solve these problems their counselors and staffs work hard to serve you well they do what you would do for the people in need if you had the time since you don't have a time you give to have the services provided by others here is a pledge card for this year's United Appeals drive I always sign this willingly pledging as much as I can afford because no one knows better than I how great the need is and how worthy is the cause this year's drive for the United Appeals Red Cross is now on you will be asked to sign one of these pledge cards or to give through your payroll donation plan whatever you do give enough for whatever you give is an investment in the health and welfare of your entire community when you give to United appeals you have given all at once to the Community Chest with its 69 red feather agencies plus the Red Cross USO United Cerebral Palsy sister Kenny boys club and Heart Association those are agencies which Express your good neighborliness and that is why there are no strangers in your area but it takes money lots of it to maintain their facilities and their services then it isn't too much to ask that you set aside the cost of a pack or two of cigarettes a week for this is it and ladies I'm sure you can contribute the price of that second cup of coffee and the price of the mid-afternoon soda will meet that quota even if you don't spill it 25 50 cents a week we'll do the best that you can when you give to United Appeals Red Cross remember that you are helping yourself along with the half million people in Newark Irving ttan East Newark Harrison Arlington Kearny and North Arlington so give generously give the United Way in [Music]
