The Well Of The Saints By John M. Synge

This traditional Irish folk drama fuses rhythmic, muscial speech with lively characters. The satiric theme--that sometimes it is better to preserve one's illusions than to face reality--is expressed through the episode of Martin and Mary Doul's miraculously restored sight. The poor, simple, superstitious folk that inhabit Synge's Irish countryside reveal a zest for life and a racy genius for language. Through them, Synge expresses a sense of life's comedy, richness, and pathos.
