When Valerie Stanton, an actress, strikes her bullying producer a single blow with a metal statuette, he falls dead at her feet. Thereafter, Valerie's tortured conscience gives her no peace, and she confesses to the police in the moment of her greatest triumph.
Valerie Stanton accidentally kills her producer and former lover, Gordon Dunning, during an argument about the direction her career should take. She wants to star in a revival of Hedda Gabler to prove her versatility as an actress. Other characters involved in the plot are Michael Morrell (Genn), Valerie's new beau; Marian Webster (Trevor), who is accused of committing Valerie's crime; and police Capt. Danbury (Greenstreet)
