More recently, it has reversed the process and reentered the sea. The whale is the largest animal to ever evolve on the Earth. The purpose of the cruise of the Calypso in this film is to gather data on the biology, physiology and natural history of this remarkable animal. Divers film, for the first time, giant finback whales underwater. They also attach marking buoys to try to track the migratory patterns of the whale. Underwater listening devices are used to record the peculiar sounds produced by whales.
