There are 15 million square kilometres of fertile land, ideal for ranching that cannot be used. The parasite this fly carries, trypanosome, kills all domestic animals and is difficult to kill by spray because the natural population is so low. Research work is now going on in Tanzania, Gambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe to eradicate the fly and help Africa to become a major meat producing country
