[Music] The earth turns toward the sun. Birds return. Buds form on dry branches. The soil loosens and the water swarms with life. Spring and the cycle begins again. Nature abundantly overflowing. Yet this extravagant flowering, this rebirth is only a masquerade for it conceals the beginnings of a bitter existence. For any of nature's creatures, beginning is easy. The embryionic crayfish is secure in his egg sack, firmly fixed to the underside of the mother's armored body. But released from that constraint, the hazardous business of living begins. Nothing in nature is more vulnerable than the newly born. Glistening, minute, defenseless young crayfish are caviar for every larger creature that swims or crawls through their stream. [Music] Quickly, the young crayfish forms an external skeleton of chalk and lime. His first defense, but an ambiguous protection. His body grows. His armament will not. He must shed it, and shedding may kill. [Music] The survivors need food, and their widespread hunt exposes them to other hunger-driven creatures. [Music] [Music] And now what seemed like a harmless piece of wood contributes to their decimation. [Music] [Music] At a year, water scorpion, stickleback, and the malevolent twig are no longer a threat to the crayfish. But growth remains a persistent enemy. The process of shedding the skin is more risky than ever. The devices of nature are often imperfect. [Music] The reward for his persistence is continued life, but he is exhausted and defenseless without his shell. Rocks and sand become a temporary refuge while the skin again hardens. Fighting off the constricting skeleton is always an agony. For some crayfish, it is fatal. [Music] But nature's failures are never total. Another banquet is spread for her scavengers.
