The Second Time Was Best (1960s)

[Music] the Jack Douglas true television series in association with Bing Crosby productions across the seven seas combining two different worlds of travel and adventure the fabulous 15 adventure sundown and presenting tonight at home abroad colorful true travels to the four corners of the earth good evening ladies and gentlemen mrs. Jack Douglas last week philippe and marion de Lacy of los angeles california showed us the films of their second trip to europe and for years a trip in which they went back to the same places they visited the first time and quite appropriately last week's episode which took us to Switzerland and Italy was entitled the second time around well tonight the delay sees complete their journey as they take us to France England and Ireland and in concluding their journey Phil and Marian emphatically say the second time was best [Music] hello again ladies and gentlemen in case you missed last week's program where the delay sees I'm Philippe for pillow and this is my wife Marion last week we concluded our visit to Italy at the town of Bellagio by the shores of lovely Lake Como from there our next stop was in France we spent several days on the French Riviera which somehow he had bypassed in our first trip to Europe we found the Riviera as beautiful as it's cracked up to be but also quite expensive during the tourist season however outdoor cafes are plentiful and reasonable the bullfighting school @ro aroused Philippe's curiosity and I agreed to tag along ARLA the heart of the Camargue the equivalent of our cowboy country at the school we met Monsieur Maurice LuPone Maurice the Bulls that you raised here in the Camargue are used for fighting in Spain no no no no it's not the same I suppose like in Spain used to kill but these bulls that we lifting is that the leaving canal that burn canal I'll use only for games we don't kill no kill no Kane no kill God so expensive and tabbouleh is necessary such a bull root only this and not your body very important no so dangerous also you make like this you see taste so cool mm-hmm you see we go to see may I Drive this yeah yeah yeah yeah I do with this yeah like this and a bull laughs all right and then I go yeah that and tabooed rules ladies [Music] also in southern France nestled at the base of these craggy hills is Louis though de Bourgh Marnier the restaurant that rates three stars in guide Michelin the supreme authority of French cooking in the kitchen chef boulier explained his famous specialty a small light of lamb in a pastry crust the recipe involves the stuffing of lamb kidney mushrooms herbs and Madeira wine the chef doesn't speak English and I comprehend French poorly but I did have sense enough to order the specialty merci this is a certificate program may I see it Marian oh this number means that this many have been served toast and that the the patent registration number for the published recipe Oh nobody else then can use this recipe except that isn't we had never realized that French recipes can be patented I wonder if that's possible in our own country anyway patents are not it looked delicious and it was our first trip to Paris four years ago we had meticulously avoided what we call the tourist attractions that has been a mistake and we realized how wrong we had been we made up for it by doing the usual things such as killing a pleasant hour at a sidewalk cafe [Music] here's the latest word and riverboats and they seem to get more and more elegant as the years go by the same cuts through the heart of Paris and when the weather is right as it was on this particular day this is probably as good a way as any to get an overall view of Paris well it doesn't be a helicopter view but it's the next best thing also these river cruises are not too expensive Paris and perfumes are almost synonymous and at the over and I decided to splurge on just one teensy weensy bottle would yes I would Jenny I'd like to something new Belden Nui bending me did you think you never tried you know I have never can I show you give me your hand it's delicious that is too heavy do you have something lighter too heavy yeah well for me it's too heavy well shall we try Kevin oh I like that that's delightful yes it seems really and I showed you the bottle my dad look beautiful what woman could resist a hairstyling by a present expert I couldn't he didn't and though it was expensive Philippe didn't mind because notice the sign outside Dom's a Masood women and men and sure enough in the same so long my brave bullfighter was getting the same treatment this is a hair and of these a hairnet for bed huh yeah [Music] [Applause] my friends and the state should see me now you don't find these may be seated no no you don't know it's probably a very very practical yes oh that's a very very fine hair the best haircut I have ever had where did you learn how to speak English so well only by myself were very close with records is I wish I could speak French as well as you speak English now feeling thoroughly Parisian we did as the Parisians we rode the crowded buses spent hours browsing the left bank book stalls and whenever we could we tried to brush up on our high school French always making certain there weren't any other tourists around alas [Music] this could only be England London to be exact and the trooping of the color celebrating the Queen's official birthday simply by checking the British tourist office we were given passes to one of the many specially erected platforms the Queen Mother is very popular and receives many cheers from the crowd [Music] now the Queen reviews her troops looking very slim and trim in her elegant red uniform [Music] [Music] it's truly a magnificent spectacle and I'll always be glad that we arrived in England just in time to see it this is the speakers corner of Hyde Park in London and to the British I think that Hyde Park is the symbol of every man's right to free speech all you need to speak your mind is a soapbox and a loud voice and apparently you can say anything you please let's listen socialism friend is only possible it is only possible where you have a society with a means of production and distribution are developed to such an extent where an abundance of the necessities of life can be produced in abundant civically I'm very adamant on this please God mention work on a Sunday sir I'm too heavy for light works to live a heavy what we're the scientists can prophesy nobody here comes another lady you're gonna get the Chopra what happens now there is a singing woman I'll tell you what I do we let us sing for you I'm very big down thank you very much [Applause] [Music] [Music] throughout England and especially in Ireland we met some of the most interesting and unusual people we have ever met in our two trips to Europe you'll see what I mean after this brief intermission London like most of Europe's large cities as a shopper's paradise but you must know where to look and what to buy everyone we talked to said you must visit the Burlington Arcade and I did this bell ringer is called a beetle and there are four beetle station at the arcade the shops are small but fascinating and one in particular I found irresistible just love it mr. peel what would you follow this pattern is very intarsia intarsia design it is an inlaid pattern on the sweater itself and inlaid what pattern yes where is this mitten knitted in there Scotland up in Scotland where we think all the best Kashmir's come from I love it I'm kind of wondering about the color if I'd like a brighter yellow or something well I think that coloring looks so lovely on you and you have to do there is the form coming along in the winter I think it's a more adaptable color to wear myself and I think it's a color with your own personal colouring which looks quite delightful on your own I'll take it I love it I left the shop just barely before closing time which is officially announced by the beetle ringing his Bell while Marian had been squandering our money I made contact with the royalty of London's cockneys best known as the pearly king and queen somehow he gravitated toward the nearest pub the Lord Nelson mr. Tinsley do all companies where no rubbish there's about 60 of us then I am the senior early clean in this group we have our monthly meetings you know decide what we should do in the next month or two for charity there we are various engagements come along and I call I mean we have our meetings and we decide whether we should go will be Bubka but we usually do and we click to immense card money flow sorely money for charity oh yes all the charity yes how did it start there a delightful sky mr. and mrs. Tinsley Oh a pearly king and queen Sanka the players theater is one of London's best known and most intimate Music Hall this is Maria Charles in Victorian costume singing ain't it nice hey did nice lady offers you a puppy made it nice when he looks at you so sloppy [Music] honey I love you please don't smile ain't it nice when a be the doctor hottie tumbles down your back under your mistress [Music] finger down your back to catch the stinger and you'll feed him kinda some 42 miles north of London we visited the Duke and Duchess of Bedford Woburn Abbey the most popular of England's many stately homes open to the public it staggers the imagination once inside the treasures of generations seem to say what a gifted creature is the species known as man we were graciously received by the Duke and Duchess this is a salt cellar that was on the wedding breakfast table of Louis the 15th and later on the winning because table glue in the 60 it wouldn't be very practical soft 74 and nowadays I don't think it's a bit big but in those days I believe Hawkins was quite luxury well it's appropriate in that in a state dining room like this and this is a state dining room yes this is the state dining room which we personally don't use very much nowadays but we have all this gold plate and silver in here and we have the Van Dyck paintings around the walls but from the point of view of a dining room it's not really the terribly practical because the dad this kitchen is what used to be there is about 300 yards away in the old days they used to have to run with the food in big boxes full of sawdust carrying everything and then I put in a kitchen and I on the floor beneath and I put in an elevator to bring the food up but while I didn't think of asking was how fast the elevator went have an elevated occurs so slow that you impact the cook with food from England we flew to Dublin and I know that the word charming is much abused in describing cities and countries abroad but charming is the word for Dublin the highlight of our visit to Dublin came at the morale hotel where bartender Terry Lewis taught us how to make Irish coffee having warmed at last we add the coffee in the sugar and mix these two together before adding the whiskey do you have to have the sugar oh yes yes it's most important about the sugar because without them the sugar the cream will not float and therein lies the secret of the Irish coffee with the cream float on top we now add the whiskey and it must be Irish which oh it's got to be Irish whiskey that though all that whiskey capable of making Irish coffee because the pure positive whiskey after that we float the cream on top by placing the spoon on the side of the glass in that fashion and proceeded to pour your cream slowly and carefully and it will float this is the most critical moment isn't it and there is your iced coffee oh thank you well your help - Cheers slow Antikythera good Killarney is as Irish as they come here we toured the countryside in a jaunting cart with mr. Khan Dorothy it was like turning back the hands of the clock this was the way the old and sisters got about before more the cows came all the all people use the chapel on the East Timorese and anywhere they were going to tell any other sister masculine even here on oh right we have st. Mary's Cathedral here are a few typical Kelley houses [Music] our ride in the Johnny cart came to an end at a local landmark known as Kate Pyrenees cottage here we would transfer to what the Irish call a trotting cart better suited for the mountain roads I think you change over now the way we've been doing for the last hundred years and as I say in Ireland now brish knows Oxnard Dino's don't break an old habit I don't make a new one you will now travel through the mountains in a pony trap or on pony back whichever you prefer [Music] the Lake District of Killarney is noted not only for its beauty but also the keen width of the chief oarsmen in these parts Henry Fleming you'll hear Henry in just a moment [Music] and now folks we have 40 miles to go on this little clip and that's 14 Irish miles now the Irish mile is a mile and a bit and the bit is as long as the mine again now this is our reporting trip we do 14 miles each way but of course we train on Guinness Stout for the job we get roughly about 28 miles to the gallon this is our fresh water way around those leaves mostly fed my Springs from the bottom as a matter of fact now the water is so good around here that if you mix a spoonful of it so a half pint of whiskey you'd never taste the wall Ireland also has its castles many as old as England's this is ashford castle which until recent years belonged to the Guinness Brewing family it's now a castle hotel hello we're mr. mrs. de Lacy and we have reservations at the castle thank you you're welcome Carmy [Music] we have been promised a room in one of the towers and walked all the way up our room is there in the right corner from here the view is simply magnificent incidentally the movie the quiet man was filmed on the castle grounds and in the village nearby and here at ashford castle we finally learned the origin of a legend of the little people mr. Collins we've heard so much about the legends of Ireland and the stories of the little people and it would be most interesting if you could tell us how they started but of course this all began a long long time ago that the Tenon's were great magicians were defeated by the Malaysians the dgeren TN went to live in caves and other hidden places and parents of the Malaysian children always told their children to keep away from those caves or they'll be carried away by their little people when those children grew up they in turn they told the same story to their own children and the tradition was carried on by storytellers who always added their own twist to the story so the occasion and the story lost nothing in the telling of the years old boy and that's I believe is held to story a little people began Ashford Castle brought to an end our six weeks journey a journey to the same five countries we had visited four years ago to sum it all up the key word is people and what wonderful colorful people Martin Kristen who carves Alvin horns the jolly winemaker mantra and the Swiss pilot Ernest sack sir will remember Jimmy has an hour eloquent guide in Rome mister paconne II who creates hand-painted dresses Leonardo Ricci Florence's famous architect and also in Florence the leather embossers and the two soccer players and the boy who sang Joel tsamina a drama Lowe's intimate restaurant in Rome and of course the dozens of fascinating people we've just seen in France England and Ireland thanks to these and so many other people we didn't have time to show you Marian and I say in all sincerity the second time was best well ladies and gentlemen we certainly enjoy the two weekly half hours we've spent with you showing you these films if you should have any questions about the places we visited or the people we met we'd be happy to answer your card or letter thank you again ladies and gentlemen and I hope that you and we will be meeting soon across the seven seas now here's Jack ladies and gentlemen tonight as we did last week we have again presented the talking world of travel adventure you have heard as you did last week the actual voices of the people the delay seas met and the sounds and the music of the places they visited I want you to know that we're all deeply grateful for your response to this new technique of presenting travel and adventure programs on television the technique of hearing as well as sing never before in television history have travel films been presented in this manner next week morning people more new ideas from across the seven seas until then thank you so much and good night ladies and gentlemen boys and girls
