Rossellini's historical film describes an era and a man's rise to power. It charts the early life of Louis XIV dominated by the regents, his consolidation of personal power, the construction of Versailles and the centralization of court life. As in the filmmaker's earlier neorealistic and narrative films, there is emphasis on the person in interaction with his physical, social, and cultural environment. (Does not circulate)
