Description: This 1960 documentary was made by the Shell Film Unit and covers the different benefits of motion picture technology, more specifically that it has revealed things that the human eye would otherwise not be able to see. This includes a short history of pioneering techniques from moving pictures to time lapses and slow motion footage. It also covers how these different techniques have been used over time with applications in medicine, plant growth, and astronomy. The footage is mostly in black and white, and covers a rapid succession of different applications of these filming techniques. 0:20 A man looks through a microscope at flashing light, 0:32 Title "The Revealing Eye: A Shell Film", 0:42 Cancer cells under the microscope, 0:53 Title slide explaining the benefits that cinematography has given to gain more insight into things the human eye can’t see, 1:20 a sequence of cat pictures to create a moving picture, 1:50 a series of images of a man jumping on the same photographic plate, 2:00 Individual strips of film of a cat falling to reveal motion, 2:50 Sequence of men riding horses, 3:18 True slow motion short of a man throwing a discus, 3:45 Slow motion of ballistics passing through bubbles, 4:09 Glass fracturing in slow motion, 4:50 Beans growing in a time lapse, 5:20 time lapses of different plants and flowers growing, 6:25 time lapse of fungi , 6:45 time lapse of different crystals, 7:32 Microscopic time lapses of blood flow and cell division, 8:20 time lapse of a chick embryo developing, 8:54 different forms of X ray cinematography such as a dogs movement and a human stomach, 9:26 X ray of a human drinking and swallowing, 9:41 X ray recording of a human speaking in German, 10:22 high speed camera showing movement of a fly’s wing, 10:58 various slow motion shots of action in water such as discharge of torpedoes or drops of water from an atomizer, 11:42 Slow motion wood being cut, 11:57 Production of nails in slow motion, 12:24 Slow motion of the insertion of a foreign object into a running jet engine, 12:43 Time lapse of the movement of a glacier, 12:56 Flickering of the Northern Lights, 13:08 Shots of the curvature of the earth as a rocket takes off, 13:48 Several shots of the movement of celestial bodies such as the moon and Jupiter, 14:28 a close up of the surface of the sun, 14:47 time lapse of solar ejections shooting into space, 15:09 Dark Brown Delamination to reveal cell activity in malignant tissue, 15:35 Camera shot of changes in pressure around an aircraft wing in black and white and color, 15:57 Hot and cold water mixing in color, 16:15 footage of stress caused by a train on a rail, 16:42 Observing the reflex action of the pupil of the eye, 16:55 footage from inside of the body such as the lung, womb, and abdomen, 17:29 Time lapse of the sun setting, 17:52 Closing credits "Made by Shell Film Unit" and list of special thanks including Physics Laboratory at John Hopkins University.PeriscopeFilm 702K subscribers Videos About Support Us on Patreon 1940s "YOU BE THE JUDGE" J.I. foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign foreign cells imperceptible to the human eye revealed an active growth by the camera [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] with a single photograph an instant of time can be isolated and preserved with a series of photographs movement itself can be recorded and analyzed Edward mybridge made this experiment in the 1870s using a battery of 20 cameras the sequence seen in order contained the basic elements of movement another method was to record successive images on a single photographic plate although simpler this had the disadvantage of superimposition to overcome it the French physiologist mare conceived the idea of moving a strip of film between each exposure with this more refined technique he was able to record and study the corrective movements of a cat falling these historic Chrono photographs taken in the early 1890s were part of his research in animal locomotion here the separate images lay side by side but the camera could equally well be turned so that the film moved vertically in this fashion in seeking to perfect an instrument for the scientific analysis of movement mare had hit upon the principle of the motion picture camera this was the Forerunner of this true slow motion filmed by one of Mare's Associates no guess after the invention of cinematography foreign from its earliest days the motion picture camera was brought to bear on things never before observed in detail a ball bouncing on a jet of water was an early high-speed study ballistics demanded higher speeds the action of a pellet piercing a bubble was demonstrated by lucianne bull at 1200 pictures a second in 1905. Krantz took 5 000 pictures a second in 1909 Chardon followed with seventy thousand and filmed the fracture of glass at 200 000 pictures a second this last study of a bullet virtually tapping against a glass plate was made in 1940 at more than six million pictures a second movement is slowed down and analyzed time appears to be expanded so that every kind of Rapid visual event can be seen and studied [Music] movements too fast for the eye to follow or conversely too slow to be perceived as early as 1898 the German botanist Wilhelm Factory compressed the growth of beans over 11 days into a few seconds by use of the time lapse camera movement appears to be speeded up to reveal processes too slow to watch in nature time is accelerated to disclose the plant kingdom in Dynamic growth [Music] we can watch as the daughter circles entwines and strangles its victim when the daughter meets the convolvulus the rivals lock in Mortal Kombat [Music] we can observe the processes of growth and Decay as the Strange World of the fungi is revealed [Music] [Applause] [Music] or the growth of crystals in geometric perfection [Music] however [Music] [Applause] camera and microscope were combined in the early 1890s by maray to record the behavior of blood corpuscles he was followed by Commando who made these studies of blood circulation in 1912. foreign ly the time lapse camera has been used to study the ordered complexities of cell division at first these new plant cells seem identical but later they may become Leaf bark or flower we can follow the process of animal growth watch the fertilized egg of a rabbit as it divides and divides again to form an embryo with all its diversity of tissues each with its own function [Music] [Applause] in a matter of seconds we see a whole day's development of a chick embryo now the backbone is beginning to form [Music] with careful manipulation of cells taken from a living organism bone can be grown in isolation foreign lapse camera has been used to study growth here x-ray cinematography serves to demonstrate function the movement of a dog's leg and of the human stomach were photographed by Dr Mcintyre as early as 1897. more recently x-rays have been combined with microscopic techniques to throw light on small invisible movements such as these the digestive tract of the common fly [Music] combined with television for extended medical examination here drinking and swallowing combined with sound recording to demonstrate the mechanism of human speech foreign [Music] different techniques reveal the functioning of other mechanisms a moving object placed before a fly and seen through the multiple lenses of its compound eye shows that it recognizes movement rather than visual detail here the high-speed camera slows down the movements of the fly's wing and reveals the gyroscopic action of the tiny balancing arm just behind it whether it is to study this or this the camera can reveal the elements of movement vital to understanding its performance is studied in relation to design the spread of droplets from an atomizing spray the action of propellers underwater or the discharge of torpedoes from a submarine the course taken by a single ear of wheat in a threshing machine [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the vibration of a lathe during a particular cutting operation [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] the production of nails when the machine's speed is increased Beyond its capacity foreign the effect of introducing a small metallic object into the air intake of the jet engine [Music] beyond the workshop and the laboratory a new view of Earth and Sky [Music] or the movement of a glacier during one whole year the ephemeral flickerings of the Aurora Borealis the great circle of the Earth as a rocket leaps Beyond its atmosphere foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the slow Majestic movements of the heavenly bodies this Eclipse was recorded by Goma in 1912. in 1928 W.D Wright made this study of Jupiter and one of her moons on the left by ultraviolet and on the right by infrared here speeded up the rotation of Mars or the Earth's Shadow advancing across the face of the Moon [Music] in close-up the fiery mass of the Sun seething with activity normally the solar atmosphere can only be seen during a total eclipse but Leo invented the coronagraph a kind of artificial eclipse with it in 1935 he made this historic record of the solar prominences shooting hundreds of thousands of miles into space [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] other Optical techniques were developed to throw light on the invisible dark ground illumination revealed cellular activity in malignant tissue [Music] an adaptation of the interference microscope shows diseased cells in relief foreign technique makes visible changes in pressure around the wing section of an aircraft color adds a further dimension here it differentiates between areas of pressure and rarefaction here between hot and cold as water mixes foreign [Music] technique it illuminates stress set up by a passing train in this transparent model of a rail covering the invisible showing how a water Beetle uses surface tension studying hidden structures within the living cell penetrating Darkness with infrared light to observe the reflex action of the pupil of the eye [Music] peering into the lungs for passing within the abdomen [Music] looking into the womb and there in the Darkness seeing light before birth [Music] constantly probing seeking the inaccessible revealing the invisible the motion picture camera records and AIDS our analysis of everything that moves beneath the Sun [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music]
