This is This is a live recording of the 1960s party/dance band Ray Nears, playing at a school dance in the National City / Chula Vista CA area. It was recorded by a high school student named Steven Marak, who apparently had a relatively decent recording rig for the time. He recorded Ray Nears and other bands (more uploads to come soon). I rescued these tapes from Marak's estate sale, where I found them in a dusty, forgotten box in the garage. If I hadn't bought them, they'd almost certainly been thrown in the trash. They represent a rare peek into what a school dance band in the 60s sounded like. I should also note that on Tom Waits was a schoolkid in the area at the time of these recordings, and was likely familiar with the bands on the Marak tapes. As far as I can tell, Ray Nears only put out one obscure 45 record of their own, and have otherwise been lost to obscurity. If you or someone you know was involved in the band, but sure to leave a comment!
