Description: Reviews the development of the agriculture and economics of the pre-Civil War South, and traces this growth from the early Virginia colonies. Shows present soil conditions in the south, views of southern mansions, contemporary drawings, and recreated scenes. An emphasis is placed upon the English influence in architecture and customs upon the plantation system and the pressure of the industrial revolution which caused a shift from tobacco to cotton. Points out that while the plantation owners and bankers benefited greatly by the plantation system's socio-economic structure the shallow depth of these benefits laid the foundation for the system's own inevitable destruction.
