THE PHANTOM II IN ACTION

[Music] The ultimate measure of a weapon system is its ability to deliver weapons on the target in any weather and within varying extremes of altitude, range, and target aspect. It must be capable of carrying devastating ordinance and possess the means to locate, identify, and track the target by day or by night. It must employ systems for consummating the attack with a maximum of accuracy and effect. A requirement such as these imply an aircraft of superb performance. The performance of Macdonald's all service fighter, the Phantom 2, has been repeatedly demonstrated. Shortly after going into service with the United States Navy, the Phantom began an assault on the foremost world's records, setting 15 marks, recognized by the International Aeronautics Federation. [Music] These records, several of which remain unbroken after 3 years, attest to the Phantom speed and maneuverability, its phenomenal rate of climb and high altitude characteristics. From the rarified upper air to the punishing high Q area close to the ground, the Phantom is singularly competent. The ability to deliver weapons on the target has also been proved by squadrons equipped with the F4 series. Highlighting certain aspects of that ability was a weapons demonstration in June of 1963 before the president of the United States. The target was a Q2C Fireb drone flying at 460 mph, 1200 ft over the Pacific. The Navy scrambled four Phantoms of VF-114 to intercept. Leading the flight was Command Joe Consen of the Arvarks with his RIO Lieutenant Ross Terry. Lieutenant Commanders McCarmic, Rich, and CH Moore followed closely while Lieutenants O'Donnell, Caps, and Goreki manned their scopes in the rear. The speed was 575 mph. The altitude 500 ft. Some 25 nautical miles west of San Diego, the flight acquired the target and locked on. Four Sparrow 3 missiles were fired. In a remarkable demonstration of accuracy, all four sparrows found the mark, plunging the burning remains of the Firebee into the sea. [Music] Performances of such precision are not only an impressive testimonial to the professional skill of the Navy crews, but establish the Phantom 2 as a reliable weapon system capable of delivering the most lethal attack with pinpoint accuracy.
