Documents the lives of the villagers of Lara in the Gaajak Jikany section of the Nuer Lands in southwestern Ethiopia, showing pastorial lifestyle, some religious rites for curing sickness, and the manhood or "gar" ceremony. Illustrates daily tasks of the men as they herd cattle, build new houses, and gather for discussion of tribal problems, and the women as they prepare food, shape pottery, and weave baskets. Restricts the narrator's comments to clarifying actions or translating songs rather than offering commentary on the scenes observed., Presents the most important relationships and events in the lives of the Nuer, Nilotic people in Sudan and on the Ethiopian border. Demonstrates the vital significance of cattle and their central importance in all Nuer thought and behavior.
