Description: This black & white promotional film is about the new Mobil 210 Battery. There is no copyright at the beginning or end of the film so the date of the production is about 1952 when this battery was released. Title Credits over a Mobil battery - stays stronger, lasts longer, costs no more: The New Mobil 210 battery, presented by Socony Vacuum (:09-:31). A man starts a car - the old fashioned way with the strong arm starter. Less than 40 years ago the electric starter was born. Oil lamps gave way to electric lights and manual horns gave way to electric horns. Then came the radio in cars, directional indicators, electric windshield wipers, electric window raisers, and lights and more lights. When the car is idle or stopped the battery may have to take care of more than 40 electric units (:32-2:12). Over the years, the battery has improved, explanations are given. Average life of a battery is shown in a graph. Where the battery is and has been is shown. Animation shows the generator passing power to the voltage regulator to the battery and explains the hows and whys of battery placement and what's good (2:13-4:09). Important part of a battery is its electrolyte, a solution of sulphuric acid and water. An animated demonstration shows the battery and what occurs when this solution is in play. High heat can ruin a battery in hours (4:10-5:22). The electrolyte when idle drops its strength. This is explained and shown (5:23-6:42). Mobil battery shown: it has greater resistance to higher temperatures, overcharging, less self-discharge. A car starts in the snow. The new Mobil 210 battery, a modern battery for a modern car (6:43-7:43). A battery discharge test is shown. The overcharge life test is also run. destruction tests are run to ruin the battery. Then the battery can be torn apart and examined. A graph shows how the new Mobil 210 battery is fairing. The new battery is doing well . (7:44-9:22). A test is conducted by placing the battery into a temperature of zero and then started. The new Mobil 210 battery stays stronger and lasts longer. A salesman sells a battery to a customer (9:23-10:43). The battery specs are explained and shown. A full explanation is given as to why the new 210 battery is good and for you (10:44-12:11). Easy to use and easy to understand, shots of the new batteries in a store display. The new Mobil 210 battery is shown again (12:12-12:37). End credits (12:38-12:45).

[Music] remember the strong-arm starter using a hand crank to turn over an engine seems like ancient history and yet it was less than 40 years ago that the electric starter was born that began a parade of electric powered equipment oil and gas lamps were replaced with electric lights the hand powered klaxon gave way to electric horns then came automobile radios directional indicators electric windshield wipers electric window racers and always lights lights and more lights [Music] all together in the modern car when the engine is stopped or idling the battery may have to take care of as many as 40 electrically operated units and the list continues to grow over the years a number of improvements have been made in the battery that have given a tremendous capacity and starting ability without increasing its dimensions plates have been made longer-lasting with more capacity and power also the number of plates per cell has been increased by developing thinner yet stronger grids separators container walls and partitions yet the average life of a battery since 1937 despite such outstanding improvements has dropped substantially this decrease was caused mainly by two developments first the battery was moved from under the seat of floorboard to under the hood of the car while moving the battery under the hood made it easier to service regularly the new location alongside the engine increased the operating temperature of the battery as much as 100% second the voltage regulator was introduced to control the charging rate of the new high output generators which have more than double the charging rate of older types charging current from the generator must pass through the voltage regulator to recharge the battery when the battery is charged to capacity the voltage regulator acts as an automatic switch to cutoff the charging current or reduce it to a safe level but if as frequently happens the voltage regulator is set to high or if it sticks in the high position the battery suffers from overcharging overcharging causes excessive internal heat in the battery the under the hood location causes excessive external Heat the combination of both is the major cause of shorter battery life and it's easy to understand why as we all know one of the essential parts of the battery is its electrolyte a corrosive solution of sulfuric acid and water this solution becomes more corrosive as it's temperature is increased when the electrolyte in a conventional battery gets hot either from under the hood heat from overcharging or from both the acid attacks the plates causing the active material to wash out of the grids more rapidly it also weakens and even chars the separators in addition the heat speeds up loss of water from the solution so that the electrolyte becomes more acid still more corrosive and the heat actually causes more overcharging which causes still more heat and so on in a vicious cycle tests show that a battery can be ruined completely in a matter of hours from the combination of heat and high acid another reason for short battery life is that batteries are often installed in cars in a semi discharged condition caused by self discharge while standing idle in stock frequently a battery runs down through self discharge after it has been installed in a car in either case the result a shorter battery life the electrolyte in a battery standing idle steadily drops in strength or specific gravity the reason is that the acid leaves the solution and combines with the plates to form a harmful material called sulfate the part of the plate that becomes sulfated produces no current so the amount of power the battery can deliver is decreased when the generator charges the battery it changes the sulfate back into electrolyte the more sulfate there is and the longer it has been there the more it resists being sent back into solution by the charging current so with a sulfated battery enough current doesn't get past the voltage regulator to fully recharge the battery the result is a SiC continually run down battery that has even less of a chance against today's hotter operating conditions these are the essentials of longer battery life greater resistance to high temperature greater resistance to overcharging less self discharge plus high capacity and cold weather starting ability for dependable performance and here's the first great development specifically designed to meet today's different tougher operating conditions high-temperature overcharging self-discharge the new mobile 210 battery the first really modern battery for the modern car proved best by actual service as well as rigid laboratory tests one such test the SAE lifecycle test indicates among other things a battery's resistance to shedding its power producing active materials in this test a battery is discharged at a high rate for one hour then it is recharged at a low rate for five hours the temperature is kept well over a hundred degrees and readings are taken at regular intervals until the battery fails completely this is the continuous overcharge life test which also is run until the battery fails it has been established by the sae as the method to measure the life of the battery in terms of resistance to overcharging these tests are destruction tests that is they are run until the battery is completely ruined after failure each battery is torn down and carefully examined the results of such testing show that compared to a conventional battery the new mobile 210 battery provides approximately 1/3 more useful power throughout its life and that it provides a longer useful life about 14% longer in fact under the self discharge test the new mobile 210 battery shows a far lower self discharge rate than a conventional battery in actual service there is up to 40% less self discharge the result is much more ready power at any time while the battery is standing idle and longer battery life for the next test the five-second voltage rating test a battery is first left standing in a cold room long enough so that its innermost part is at a temperature of zero or below this test is considered by all authorities to be the best measure of the battery's cold weather starting ability after hooking it up for testing the battery is discharged at a rate of 300 amperes which is the average drain of a car starting motor at zero after five seconds the voltage reading is taken and the results of this test on the new mobile 210 battery show that it has top-notch cold-weather starting power testing like this along with Road testing and cars under all conditions proves beyond doubt that the new mobile 210 battery stays stronger lasts longer gives a longer lifetime of more useful service that's why installing a new mobile 210 battery in a car means installing the very best a battery that you can be proud of as the finest on the market to be sure it delivers its full measure of unexcelled performance give it the kind of treatment it deserves first of all make sure it's fully charged before installing it in a car as indicated on the battery itself the new mobile 210 battery is fully charged when the starter scope shows a reading of two and 1/10 volts per cell or when the hydrometer gives a reading of 1260 specific gravity like any battery the performance of the new mobile 210 battery suffers if the electrolyte is allowed to fall below proper level so always add water to it when necessary and whenever a mobile 210 battery gives a reading of 50% or less on the starter scope be sure that it is recharged again remembering that a voltage reading of two and 1/10 volts indicates a fully charged cell first on the market with the answers to today's greater needs here's why new mobile batteries last longer and stay stronger because they resist under the hood heat because they give more power throughout their entire life because they have a greater overcharge resistance less self discharge because internal parts last longer and with all this they cost no more that's the story of your new mobile 210 battery a simple convincing story that's easy to use easy to understand it gives quick conclusive proof that for the best in battery performance in battery life in more lasting useful power it's your exclusive line of new mobile 210 batteries the greatest battery values ever offered [Music]
