The New Deal

Explains that the New Deal marked a fundamental change in government in the United States, and brought an end to the laissez-faire philosophy. Analyzes the New Deal as a response to the problem of the depression, and shows, that while it was a basic change, it was not a depression., Uses documentary stills and newsreel footage to reconstruct Depression conditions and New Deal policies enacted by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Shows the despair and panic that appeared uncontrollable under the Hoover administration and which threatened to become even worse with Roosevelt's inauguration until Congress granted him executive powers. Discusses policies enacted to strengthen the banking system, create work programs, subsidize farmers, allot pensions for the aged, and encourage trade unions.
