Presents a documentary on the people of the Southern Appalachian region which includes parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Tells of their poverty and their exploitation by timber and coal speculators beginning in the early 20th century. Discusses self-help efforts and government projects designed to relieve social problems of the area.
