Thorton Wilder's example of the modern trend toward nonrepresentational symbolic theater represents ninety Christmas dinners (and ninety years of life) in the Bayard household. All action takes place around the dining room table, laden with imaginary food and drink. By stylizing dialog, dispensing with "real" scenery, ignoring the illusion of time, and emphasizing universal experiences. Wilder expresses his view that life is cyclical.
