Jane Wyman presented tonight by new glean the toothpaste for people who can't brush after every meal and gentle Joy the new liquid that makes dishwashing almost nice and now Jane Wyman good evening it was my great pleasure last week to meet a Charming woman who though she was well up in years she had the youth and vitality of a school girl I asked her what her secret was for staying so young and she said I only worry about two things keeping healthy and happy if those two elements are present in your life you haven't time to worry about anything else and now tonight it's my pleasure to portray the role of Anne Baker I hope you'll enjoy this dramatic presentation of a story we call small talk we'll rejoin Jane Wyman in a moment oh Nancy time to do the dishes wait come back look what we've got new gentle joy to make your dishwashing almost nice try it almost nice is the tiny capful that makes so many beautiful Suds Joy Suds that smell so nice M feel so so nice ah are so very gentle to your hands did you know that Joy is actually the mildest liquid detergent you can buy well it is gentle gentle joy and at the end when you're through Joy leaves everything so sweet and clean and fresh the water the dishes and you new gentle Joy [Music] makes dishwashing almost nice oh always listening on the phone now the least you could do is listen to me nobody ever listens to me you your father your brother nobody now and I'm talking to you is there any coffee well there is it's cold and did you hear a word I said I heard every word well I never know whether you're listening to me or not all I know is you never do anything about it you want some coffee no I'm too upset and you can't sit on that phone night and day it isn't natural there are three other people on this party line has taken me almost two weeks to find out their names and when I find out the third one I won't have to listen well why and I'm your mother I have a right to know because my husband would still be alive well that you can't bring him back that way he was lying right there when I came home well I did all that I could but you could have done more that man had gotten off the phone you could have at least called a doctor and he'd still be alive well what's done is done I feel just as badly as you do the telephone company won't tell you who they are well maybe that's just as well but you said you weren't hungry I eat because I'm nervous and you can't throw away your life mourning over George you knew he had a bad heart when you married him and one of these days you're going to listen to your mother there were plenty of men who wanted to marry you're talking too much well if you can't take a little advice somebody sat on that phone while George was dying they didn't listen they didn't care well I care that man killed him just ass sure as if he'd put a gun to his head and I want to know who it is the meanwhile look how we're living well I'd clean it up if I didn't have to keep my eye on you all the time I know you've done the best you could mother but stop saying the same thing over and over again oh and I'm just saying that if that husband of yours had left you some insurance you would have that's not true he couldn't get insurance he was a bad risk you know that I told you that like it was all my fault like I hadn't told you a 100 times you just won't listen to anything personally no matter what I thought about George I'll say this for him he wouldn't want you carrying on like this he may not have been the greatest provider Danny Martin that's the third name now an and I'm telling you for the last time time it won't make any difference what you say to him a man who's so inconsiderate who's so selfish he won't get off the telephone when you tell him somebody's dying won't listen to anything you going out yes well now you're listening now the fresh a will be good for you I could use a walk myself I want to be alone mom yes I understand well I'll wait up for you it might be late hello oh hello claraa I've been trying to get you for the last couple of days where have you been I tried in the morning and I tried in the afternoon I even tried you at night oh well I wanted to ask you if you wanted to go to the sale but now we've missed it oh it's okay they'll probably have another sale next month well just a minute I'll ask her it's Clara she wants to know if we'd like to go to the movies I think it'd be a good idea R would get your mind off things you go mom you won't mind she won't but I will everything Clara everything she just won't pay any attention to me she just won't listen to me is it a comedy oh good believe me I've cried enough for the past 2 weeks I know I know but but what can I do I've done the best that I can no no I'm going to bed early call me some other time goodbye what time are you going to turn in Danny what difference is it make I can't sleep anyway didn't you take the pills I gave you yes one at a time I haven't got the guts to take them off cutting yourself off from your friends isn't a very smart thing to do look doc leave me alone got to watch my favorite comedy show I wanted to find an easy way but I'm afraid you've just got to take it the final reports have been checked not good well how bad is there any chance Danny I'm a doctor I don't deal in dreams or false hopes and yet I also keep away from the word never but this is a good time to use it isn't it isn't it I'm sorry Danny but your spine was injured the nerves that You'll Never Walk again see the spinal column never mind the details just get out leave me alone [Music] please I've got a lot of speeches prepared none of them any good well I'll be back tomorrow [Music] God God don't let it be true please I didn't hear it I didn't [Music] go [Music] away I said go away didn't you hear me what do you want I want to see Danny [Music] Martin well take a good look lady this is what's left up I'm manne Baker well so what that doesn't mean anything to me I want to talk to you well I don't want to talk to you or anybody else I've got my belly full of pity and sympathy and good advice nothing you can say will change anything well I didn't come I'm not interested for 3 months I listened to a whole parade of you do gooders for 3 months you came in with your your cliches and your platitudes while I was last to that hospital bed well I'm through listening there's nobody can top that doctor you understand you want to hear some more I'll never walk again never for the rest of my life I'm strapped to this thing they're dead they're dead and I might as well be dead with them when you you're dead it's over I know you don't know anything I know that you're alive a man's alive not half a man what am I supposed to do collect stamps take a basket weaving if I had the courage I'd buy a gun I'd kill what's left of me you're trying to make me feel sorry for you feel sorry for me I don't need it I don't need people coming up here staring at me like I'm some strange kind of animal with their phony smiles and their plans that won't work and and I'm lying I do need them after 3 months They Carried me up here yesterday and they finally left me alone I cried I haven't cried since I was a kid and I cried I have to go look don't go look there's lots more I have to say to you things that I've kept inside maybe it would be good if I told him to a stranger well I don't want to listen I've got my own problems can't don't you understand but you said you wanted to see me but I made a mistake it h someone else wait [Music] hello yeah yeah I'm all right listen listen a funny thing just happened a strange woman came in here to see me no no I don't know who she was I don't know what she wanted I I guess I didn't give her a chance to yeah honey come on up yeah I'll be here [Music] miss you Miss pardon me I didn't mean to frighten you you live around here no I I was going to visit some friends oh I see the reason I stopped you is we've had a little trouble around here lately oh nothing to be scared about really the neighborhood is well patrolled only this fell we can't seem to get our hands on him thank you I'll walk with you I don't want to alarm you but this fellow has a nasty habit of picking on women walking alone thank you for your interest officer I I'm sure I'll be all right of course you will this is where my friends live you better have them drive you home yes sir this fellow we're looking for is carrying a gun and some people when they've got their hands on a gun they don't know what to do with it you're right then again some people do that's right ma'am some do [Music] [Applause] [Music] Canadians are busy people they can't always brush their teeth after every meal like this girl she hasn't time to brush after eating so she uses new gleam toothpaste and they can't always brush even though it's best so they use gleam the toothpaste for people who can't brush after every meal it's Canada's newest finest toothpaste gleam removes Decay causing bacteria with each brushing only gleam has gl70 new cleaner and bacteria fighter this magnified picture shows mouth bacteria before brushing see each gleam brushing removes most of these bacteria and wipes out their enzymes for most people a gleam brushing before breakfast freshens the mouth all day yes the mouth stays fresh from morning until night try Proctor and gambles gleam gleam removes bacteria with each brushing gleam the toothpaste for people who can't brush after every meal well among other things we discussed Insurance you just name the time and I'll be there 9:30 no trouble at all of course thank you for calling oh she wants to see me 9:30 naturally well you don't have to say it like that how else am I supposed to say it it's strictly a business appointment Peter why is it all your business appointments are at night and why is it if you're not on that phone Charming some woman then you're rushing off to some business appointment dad lower your voice will you awake the children I asked you a question then I'll answer you because I sell insurance not groceries if a client wants to see me at 4:00 in the morning I jump because if I don't some other agent's going to hook them first very admirable I'm sure and now let's discuss why all your business clients at night are women you're exaggerating things Peter don't treat me like a child all right you want the truth I'll give it to you exactly that way in order to feed your appetites I've got to work 24 hours a day I haven't paid for half of this stuff yet I'm so filled up with debts it's choking me and it's all my fault oh let's discuss at some other time now I've got an appointment look you gave me lectures on how a wife should help her husband get ahead so I stopped pinching pennies because you told me you had to spend money to make it you remember that I'll get home as soon as I [Music] can yes does Peter aare live here well this is a switch is he at home yes but it seems he's gotten his appointment slightly mixed up won't you come in who is it m supposing you tell me well good evening I'm afraid we haven't met Miss uh Baker Baker Mrs Anne Baker something go wrong dear please ignore my wife Mrs Baker does my name mean anything to you oh yes of course we met at at at I'm sorry Mrs Baker I really don't remember you wouldn't oh that's where you're wrong Mrs Baker my husband has an amazing memory for women m a little domestic problem which I'm sure would only bore you I gather you've come to see me about some insurance you're wrong why else would you come you're on the same party line I am now that you've got to blame on the phone company I use that phone a good deal in my business I've begged them to give me a private line but they say I've just got to wait you made somebody else wait and he died now you're going to pay for it Peter she's serious you must be in the wrong place why I'm in the right place I guess you think you've got a pretty good reason for coming in here and pointing that gun at me but you've got the wrong person my husband was dying my mother told you was life or death but you wouldn't get off the phone no lady I I wouldn't do mad you know I'm not the kind of a guy that would do that tell her he's a lot of things Mrs Baker but he's not cruel wait when did this happen when 2 weeks ago tomorrow night at 8:30 two weeks now you've got to give me a chance to think four people there are four people on that party line two others besides you and me I've already seen one well the other one maybe it was the other one where were you Mr Adair i m where was I I don't know two weeks AG look I've got two little boys two kids can't you see what it'll do to them if you kill me can't you you don't know it with him I don't know it isn't but you're not sure if you'll just give me a chance don't do that look my husband sells a lot of insurance he he's he he does a lot of night work his appointments are in that book yes I'll get it two weeks ago I think that was the 10th here it is he was with a Miss Martha enrite he left here at 8:00 and returned at 11 that's right that's right then it wasn't you no lady that's what I've been trying to tell you right [Music] along I'm glad I'm glad it wasn't [Music] you see if she's got a car please get off the phone this is an emergency but who are you going to call I don't know police or doctor I was scared I was scared too it's all over now no match there's still something left that woman I'll never forget the look in her eyes as long as I live know I like she'd lost her reason for living like cried for 100 years well Peter do we know how lucky we are I think so I'm going and look at the boys when I come back I'm going to cry mad you've made a mistake there's no entry for the tth I know it isn't too important dear but where were you that night [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] that's got to be the wrong answer it's just got to be Stan holy cow how are we going to pass that test if you're going to be this stupid yeah sure I can prove it sure well give me a second huh you there now listen in order to extract the square root of Any Given number you got to old man must have forgot his key oh hang on wait a minute I'll be right back oh yeah I I thought you were somebody else I want to see Thomas Lawrence well he's not home right now mom's not home either when do you expect him a couple of minutes I guess would you like to wait yes well come on in would you like to sit down yes are are you a friend of my pops well not exactly yeah I don't think I've ever seen you before where's your father now still at work he's putting in some overtime does he often work nights no sometimes I mean well you see there's me and there's my mom and there's my older sister he's always saying how money doesn't grow on trees well he doesn't usually work this late though most of the time he's home for supper that's where I learn how tough it is to make a book honest I know that but well things have changed maybe when he was a kid things were different but boy it cost me three bucks just for my lunches and I pay for my own movies and I got well you know what I mean oh yes well then there's dates you know it costs a lot of money to take a girl out in a date that is if I could ever get to the phone to ask a girl the phone oh yeah he's always using it talking to guys in his bowling team or arguing politics with some guy loves an argument my dad he'll take either side has some real wingdings you know I I'll bet you if a movie star was trying to get me when he's on that phone he wouldn't get off could that be him maybe you might have forgot his key coming oh hi ancy Mom said she's returning the eggs that she borrowed no hurry you doing anything yeah there's a friend of my PO is here look look I'll come over later see you st I'll be wait a minute hang on that's the girl lives downstairs boy is she a pest that phone's off the hook oh sure I'm doing homework with a friend of mine has it been like that since I've been here sure self-preservation you see that's a party line and there's this old lady and once she gets on the phone there's no getting her off an old lady her name is Helen Baker and what she won't do to get me off the line she hangs out for hours and hours and hours but the minute I get on she's got a million excuses she has to call the police her house is on fire she needs a doctor Helen Baker yeah everybody's wise to her you know it's against the law to say there's an emergency when there isn't one but my dad says not to bother he says you can't teach those kind of hey are you leaving yes it's getting late yeah [Music] but what did I do now he's stand he still there yeah look where was I an is that you an are you all right yeah when I got back from the movies I thought I'd sort of straighten up a little and the dresser drawer was open and George's gun was gone oh an darling you didn't it's wrong an it's wrong the police of the Lord are someone will handle it you can't do it yourself do you understand that a lot of people have trouble Mama because they don't understand whoever was respons themselves they'll know did you find out who wouldn't get off the line well I want to know who it is I know and I'm willing to forget it well there I say you're wrong the person responsible should remember it all the rest of his life mama I don't want to be that kind of a judge I'm tired oh an I love you I'm your mother I only want what's best for you but there are some people in this world who should be taught a lesson oh compassion and understanding are all very well but I love you but you talk too much [Music] hello oh hello dear yes yes yes yes she's much better no no I went to a movie
