Campbell traces his interest in the relationships between mythology and religion to a childhood fascination with the legends and lore of the American Indians. As a young man, he began a comprehensive study of world religions and later became a professor at Sarah Lawrence College where he refined his thoughts about the role of myth and published the first of his many books, The Hero with a thousand faces. In this film, interviews with Campbell are intertwined with the scenes of the author in seminar sessions with his students.
