Description:
The Goldbergs: Episode 1543. Date: c. 1943. Cast: Gertrude Berg (Molly Goldberg); James R. Waters (Jake Goldberg); Roslyn Silber (Rosalie Goldberg); Alfred Ryder (Sammy Goldberg); Menasha Skulnik (Uncle David).
Announcer introduction: "Molly Goldberg has gotten herself into the tightest and most uncomfortable situation of all her life... The cause was the goodness of her heart and her habit of trying to save everyone she can. This time it was Grace, a cheat, a liar and petty thief who came to Lastenbury posing as Molly's daughter-in-law... Grace and her real husband George worked together on the scheme to swindle the Goldbergs... But even after George confessed his guilt to Molly, she tried to reform the girl and never told anyone who Grace really was... Grace repaid Molly by running off with some charitable funds being raised to help delinquent children... and then to cap it... Molly, confused and worried, accepted a $500 check from the County District Attorney after Grace had fled... It certainly is not a pleasant prospect that the Goldbergs face if the story gets out... Listen..."
Announcer close: "With Birdie in on the secret, it's only a question of time before the story becomes known to everyone in Lastenbury... and if Molly's secret comes out... just what the result will be, no one can predict..."
A hallmark of the golden age of radio, The Goldbergs (1929-1946) was one of the earliest entertainment programs to authentically explore Jewish life in America. Learn more at cinema.ucla.edu.
