Complete Record: In this satire of Ingmar Bergman’s style and themes, Bergman’s simple plots, used to emphasize a character’s inner complexities, are followed -- minus, however, the inner complexities. Bergman’s serious treatment of love and sex is spoofed by madcap amorous complications (between a man and a cow, for instance). Symbolism, a Bergman device for profundity, here becomes inane and scatological; e.g., Bergman’s cosmic game of chess with Death becomes a badminton game, his spiritual journey a bowel movement. The use of pigeon Swedish and bogus subtitles further satirizes foreign films in general.
