Description: Adapts the short story of the same title by Flannery O'Connor which explores the interdependence and balance of a Georgia farm's carefully ordered hierarchy of power: landowner above white worker above black worker. Shows the disruption which occurs when an elderly priest convinces Mrs. McIntyre to hire a conscientious and able Polish refugee who has brought his family to America from the war-ravaged Europe of the 1940s. Follows the underlying tensions which arise as Mr. Guizac's competence threatens the white Shortley family and his foreign manner and customs trouble the black hired hands. Reveals Mrs. McIntyre's unacknowledged dependence on her workers and her growing distraction when faced with the need to fire Mr. Guizac in order to restore the former structure of her life. Climaxes with a tragic act of complicity by which Mrs. McIntyre finally takes a stand. Features John Houseman and Irene Worth., .
