Traces, through the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, the development of the atomic bomb, the McCarthy era and nuclear proliferation. , Traces the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) from his college days in Europe to his leading position in nuclear research and his assignment as scientific director of the Los Alamos Branch of the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer's colleagues recollect their work in the isolated New Mexico location building the world's first atomic weapon, its detonation at the Trinity site in 1945 and the subsequent bombs dropped on Japan. Includes photographs and film footage only recently declassified. Concludes with Oppenheimer's efforts to limit the spread of bomb technology which led to his dismissal in 1954 and his death in 1967.
