[Music] fire fire raging through buildings and homes killing and destroying every minute of our [Music] existence every 37 seconds a fire breaks out in some city of the United United [Music] States every 2 minutes fire damages or destroys a building or home 1100 such fires every single day more than 400,000 such fires during the year [Music] every 5 minutes a fire breaks out in one of America's forests each and every day more than 16,000 acres are destroyed by fire more than 6 million Acres each year and the greatest tragedy of [Music] all every 46 minutes a human being dies because of fire each day of the year more than 30 men women and children are killed by fire more than 11,000 lives lost each year it is a tragic story a story that often begins like this [Music] [Music] or maybe the Story begins like [Music] [Applause] this or Again The Story begins like this [Music] [Applause] and here's still another beginning [Music] oh yes and here's one more beginning gasoline invisible fumes and a flame like the one inside this furnace the danger well watch this experiment you don't see any Vapors but they are there all right a powerful light reveals their Shadow on a white wall see how these Vapors flow out of the container and how they spread fumes of volatile fluids such as gasoline Benzene and Napa when they mix with air are a powerful explosive and when they reach a [Music] flame every minute of the day and and night all year long there's a fire every hour of the day and night all year long one person dies and many are hurt by fire crimes of [Music] carelessness but the people who commit them can also prevent them by just thinking by using Common Sense safe smoking head for instance are common sense use large and deep ashtrays so your cigarette won't fall onto the floor and start a fire if you smoke in your car don't throw the butt out the window and Destroy Acres of valuable Woodland don't let your child hurt himself he should be made to understand that matches even safety matches are dangerous in the hands of a youngster and about those no smoking signs there's only one reason for them to protect your life and the lives of others who work with you don't clean with gasoline use a lwh hazard solvent and bear in mind the best place to do this job is out of doors safety rules after all are just common sense for instance you're asking for trouble when you let rubbish pile up up in the attic in closets or in the basement such junk Burns easily and there's really no reason to keep it in the house another Common Sense rule is to have your heating plant checked at least once a year before the heating season begins faulty heating equipment stoves and pipes cause a lot of fires every year and that fireplace you like so well keep it covered with a metal screen it'll keep the Sparks from popping out and setting carpets and clothing a fire electric wiring is another constant Hazard extension cords under carpets and rugs can become bad fire hazards when the insulation and the wires are damaged an electric Arc May well ignite materials in contact with the wire you're asking for trouble too when you use an extension cord which is adequate for a lamp for instance and attach it to a [Music] broiler because of the heavy current which the broiler draws the extension cord will grow hot and may start a fire in the same manner too many electrical appliances on one circuit can cause the wires inside the walls to become heated the electrical circuits in your house are designed to carry certain loads which must not be exceeded they are protected by fuses and the blowing of a fuse is a danger signal the circuit is overloaded or defective be sure the fuses are of the right amperage for your circuits 15 amp usually if you would use a fuse which is larger than the one for which the circuit was designed you won't be protected against overloads the wiring within the wall May heat and there could be a [Music] fire and don't don't smoke in bed you went to bed because you were tired so you'll probably fall asleep too many people have gone to sleep forever by smoking in bed when fire strikes you must know how to report it promptly that's why it is important for you and your family to know where the nearest fire alarm box is and how to turn in an alarm it's important too for you to have the number of the fire department handy near your telephone and incidentally if you're going out tonight and employ a babysitter make very certain that she knows how to call the fire department tell her what to do if there's a fire while you're gone first get the children out of the house then call the fire department then notify you leave a note with your babysitter which tells her how to call the fire department and how to reach you that's common sense and Common Sense is the enemy of [Music] carelessness remember Three Fires out of four are started by acts of lessness [Music] when will this appalling rate of death and Destruction come to an end that is the challenge a challenge to every man woman and child in the country how will you meet this challenge oh
