Description: The North American buffalo's peak population reached an estimated 60 million before the slow steady decline in numbers began as explorers and pioneers arrived. By 1900, the massive population had dwindled to an estimated 300, mostly in Canada. Finally, measures were taken to preserve this species from complete extinction. Slowly the herds came back; today they number around 30,000 to 35,000.
