The Boss Comes For Dinner

[Music] uh [Music] uh [Music] hello mary what do you think i just came from the boss's office and he's coming to dinner thursday night that's right of course to our house oh yes bill yes i think it's wonderful well of course i'm excited about it it's just that so sudden that's all and i what do you mean you told him we'd have corned beef and cabbage he likes corned beef and cabbage while up there in his office he told me liked it better than any other dish in the world i told him it was your specialty and he practically invited himself but mary you wouldn't want to give him anything that wasn't your specialty would you no no bill of course i'm not frightened it's just that is his wife coming too oh you did will i just write or no confirming yes [Music] was that for the rehearsal darling um what rehearsal what to hear so you know perfectly well what rehearsal [Music] i know what to do oh darling i know you know what to do it's just that oh it is fun and we do want everything to go smoothly for your boss aren't you thinking more of mrs jones than you are of him oh she wrote me such a sweet nut of acceptance now come on all right so here we are just bill and mary about to receive the high and mighty mr mrs jones and it might mean a better job oh bill don't be so mercenary i'm not mercenary i like the boss it's just that i could like him a lot more if he'd give me a better job mrs jones won't you sit here and mr jones over here [Music] what are we eating jelly contaminate delicious all right now we're finished with the first course i think do i take the dishes no we both take turns emily pose says we shouldn't leave the guests by themselves that is if we can help it who goes first uh you take mr jones's and you're played and i take mrs jones as a myplate all right as i pass your end of the table i take your plates and head for the kitchen oh bill don't be so smart you're gonna break something okay mrs jones [Music] for you mr jones for you my dear the best corned beef and cabbage in the world i certainly hope he thinks so how can he help it oh but bill corned beef and cabbage is so ordinary nothing is ordinary when it's really good potatoes bill person hmm [Music] oh bill [Music] i only hope it goes as well on thursday oh what about cigars do you suppose the boss would like yours emily poe says it's better to have his kind don't worry darling i checked with the secretary this morning [Music] we can't miss all we have to do is be ourselves and that's something we can't rehearse i know darling i know it's just that oh i do want the dinner to be a success for you i want you to get that better job and i want the boys to realize you're just as smart at home as you are in the office i'm not worrying mary at home i have you [Music] at home bill has mary and mary has bill there's no reason at all why their dinner shouldn't be a success as every hostess knows of course the unexpected is what always happens so mary is on edge the night of the party expecting the unexpected at every turn [Music] yes certainly everything seems all right everything seems in apple pie order [Music] bill what's the matter haven't you make the cocktails yet i'll accept the ice oh dear hope they're not late now don't go worrying it looks beautiful i'm not worrying it's jessica nothing is going to happen something always happens oh billy here here we go darling and this time it's for real [Music] good evening hello good evening i'm so glad you become my what a lovely place you have here [Music] yes it's for real this time and bill too if he'll admit it is a bit on edge wondering if anything will happen to spoil the evening it could happen when bill offers mrs jones a cocktail she refuses she doesn't make an issue of it she merely says no no thank you so much but mary is right on her toes she's ready with some tomato juice for the guest who doesn't take cocktails the soup is excellent as were the appetizers mmm it's delicious it's a recipe mary learned from her mother and she's happy the guests like it but mary's most anxious moment of the evening is the main course the specialty of the house the heralded corned beef and cabbage in all the world mr jones favorite dish how does he the man who means so much to bill's career in business how does mr jones like the way mary smith prepares it anxious moment indeed it is between his first bite and wonderful i never tasted better in my life and he means it he isn't just being polite he really means it and mary is relieved and bill is proud all has gone well from cocktails to coffee in the living room with the boss's favorite cigars it's anyone's guess whether bill gets a better job but it's a good guess that he will it's a good guess that mr and mrs jones will come again for more of that ordinary corned beef and cabbage [Music] you
