The Berkeley waterfront: Illustrations of conservation, restoration, and development

Description: This fourteen minute, color/sound documentary feature produced by the Division of Forestry describes the beginnings of the California Youth Conservation and Training program in the 1960s. The program, administered by the California Division of Forestry, in cooperation with the California Youth Authority, the California Department of Education, the Department of Industrial Relations and the Department of Employment was started at Oak Glen camp near Beaumont, CA, and eventually grew to several more youth camps across the State. It built upon the Conservation Camp program for adults and brought disadvantaged young men into an educational program in a camp-like setting which gave them the opportunity to develop trade skills in an atmosphere of teamwork and camaraderie while also serving the State with work hours on conservation projects and firefighting work. The film focuses on operations at Oak Glen Youth Camp at its beginnings. The California Division of Forestry became the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and is now known as CalFIRE.
