Description: Uses pictures of living organs taken by gastroscopy and catheterization to examine the autonomic nervous system, which controls such involuntary body processes as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, body temperature, and the contraction and dilation of the iris. Discusses how the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system--the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems--work in complementary opposition and control and regulate the body without conscious thought. Explains that the sympathetic nerves innervate the body for action, the parasympathetic nerves relax the body, and the hypothalamus provides the feedback that determines which system will dominate at any given moment.
