The Apes (1976?)

the Gibbon the chimpanzee the orangutan and the gorilla these four animals the Gibbon chimpanzee orangutan and gorilla are all called Apes [Music] the smallest of the Apes is the gibon it walks upright like a man there are several kinds of Gibbons who look like monkeys but monkeys have tails however none of the Apes have tails and that is one of the ways that they are similar to people in their native forests of Southeast Asia Gibbons spend most of their lives in the trees a drink of water is one thing that brings them down from the branches apes are one of the very few animals who use their hands like we do here one uses its hand to drink the Gibbon has unusually long arms and with their fantastic balance and strength climbing and Swinging is easy for [Music] them of all the Apes the Gibbon is by far the fastest and the most agent probably the most familiar of all the Apes is the chimpanzee in it's native Africa the chimpanzee spends most of its time in the trees but is equally at home on the ground where they live in family groups family life is very important to chimpanzees as it is to all Apes chimpanzees are thought to be the most intelligent of all Apes more intelligent than any other animal except man ap's hands especially those of the chimpanzee and gorilla are much like those of a human movable fingers and a thumb that allows them to use their hands like we do they have fingernails and toenails very similar to ours sometimes chimpanzees use their hands in very humanlike ways they also use them in ways that are strictly for Apes like knuckle walking walking on their back feet and the knuckles of their hands chimpanzees eat mostly fruit and leaves bananas are one of their favorite foods they handle them just about the way that we do except they eat peel and all after a good lunch chimpanzees like many other animals and some people feel like taking a little rest the way they act and even the way they look sometimes seems Almost Human in the tropical forests of the islands of Sumatra and voro where this fellow comes from the natives noticed its similarity to human beings and named it orangutan which means man of the forest using their hands and feet with equal ease orans are completely at home in the trees since they live in the most remote and dense forests and are extremely shy they are very seldom seen that's why we know less about them than about any of the other Apes but we do know that they are unlike the fast moving given and orangutan is almost never in a [Music] hurry they seem to enjoy taking life [Music] easy orangutans have special hands with very long strong fingers these fingers can be curled into hooks for hanging and Swinging their thumbs are short and Stumpy and do not get in the way when the hands are used as swinging hooks orangutans are born helpless just like human babies but the young soon become very active [Music] just like human children young Apes need love and affection and where do they get it from their mother of course for little orangutans play is a large part of growing up sumers salting is a favorite of this little fellow especially just before lunch he doesn't seem to be too hungry like all parents the mother orangutan keeps her eye on the little one a stalk of celery makes a great toy and he's having [Music] fun as orangutans get older they move more slowly and [Music] deliberately old males like this one have fleshy loes that develop on the sides of their faces they look sad and gloomy but they look this way even when they're happy orangutans outside of captivity are becoming more and more rare which makes them an endangered species this is unfortunate because these giant shy red-haired Apes with their expressive humanlike faces are really gentle and peaceloving animals the largest and strongest of all the Apes is the Ferocious looking gorilla like the chimpanzee the gorilla walks on his feet and the knuckles of his hands both the mountain and lowland gorilla live in family groups these huge animals need a great amount of food and since they do not eat meat much of their time is spent Gathering and eating ground plants tender chots and leads unlike most animals apes are able to lift food to their mouths when they eat holding a twig in his huge hand and stripping the leaves with his teeth this gorilla looks like a man eating corn on the cob nobody likes to be disturbed while eating the gorilla's natural home is in the forests of Africa because of their great size they spent more time on the ground than do the other Apes the adult gorilla seems to enjoy playing as much as the younger ones do how would you like to wrestle with one of these 500 lb Giants we don't know how they learn to play tag but they do gorilla Style [Music] as people move closer and destroy the forests where they live it is becoming more difficult for the gorilla to survive this would be our loss because in spite of their great size and fierce appearance the gorillas like they are orangutans are really shy and Mild mannered creatures who mind their own [Music] business in many zoos today baby orangutans and other baby apes are being carefully raised to help increase their numbers let's hope this will ensure that we will always have our lookalike act alike friends to enjoy the smallest of the Apes the speedy and Nimble Gibbon the smartest sociable and always entertaining chimpanzee the man of the forest who is never in a hurry the orangutan and the most powerful and surprisingly shy gorilla the animals most like people the Apes [Music]
