Description: Surveys the history of written language and the development of the alphabet through a flashback from two boys using Morse code. Utilizes stills and animation to show cave paintings, the puzzle writing of the Egyptians, and the development of individual letters for consonant sounds by the Phoenicians. Records the Roman modification of the alphabet and the ways spoken English is written using a flexible adaptation of the letters.
