Complete Record: This Pan Am film "Symphony in Steel" (1963?) describes the vibrant culture and music of the Caribbean, particularly focusing on Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. The film was written by Stanley Washburn, Jr., narrated by David de la Rosa, and produced by Brandt Enos Associates. It highlights the significance of Carnival, the creation and evolution of the steel pan by Tony Williams, and the performances of the Pan Am Jet North Stars steel orchestra. The narrative also touches on the historical and cultural diversity of the Caribbean islands, their appeal to tourists, and a special event celebrating Barbados' independence. Note: Background on this film. Anthony Williams was a pioneer of the steel pan, along with Winston "Spree" Simon, Ellie Mannette and Neville Jules. He was part of the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra, TASPO, which visited England for the Festival of Britain in 1951. In 1953, Williams created an innovative soprano pan with the notes laid out in a circle of fifths. Because the instrument's surface looked like a spider's web, he called it the "Spider Web Pan". Williams started an all star steel band which, in 1962, received top honors in a much-heralded competition. This brought them to the attention of the local Pan Am manager David de la Rosa (a Trinidadian himself). Soon this band was sponsored and played as the "PanAm North Stars" and later as the “PanAm JET North Stars.” The band received a stipend and in return displayed the Pan Am logo at performances. In 1964, the band made a U.S. trip and played at Carnegie Hall, the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and on the Ed Sullivan Show. After a useful affiliation, Williams ended his band's relationship with Pan Am in 1972. • 0:12: Introduction to Carnival and music. • 1:14: Description of the Caribbean islands and their appeal to tourists. • 2:24: Mention of Trinidad, the birthplace of the steel pan. • 3:10: Overview of Trinidad's diverse culture and economy. • 4:01: Description of Trinidad's music scene and popular spots. • 5:01: Introduction to Tony Williams and the creation of the steel pan. • 6:00: Explanation of the steel pan tuning process. • 7:01: Practice session of the PanAm Jet North Stars steel orchestra. • 8:09: Recognition of the orchestra's excellence and performances. • 9:01: The orchestra's invitation to celebrate Barbados' independence. • 10:00: Reception and performances in Barbados. • 11:00: Celebration of Barbados' independence with music. • 12:02: Tony Williams receives an award for his contributions to music. • 13:00: The orchestra's plans for future performances and return to Trinidad for Carnival.
