these points to become second nature to you because they'll make the difference between a good hunter and someone who shouldn't be hunting at all number one get to know your firearm and it's basic working parts and don't skimp on the time needed to keep your firearm in perfect working condition number two always and i mean always know which way that muzzle is pointing and be prepared for the unexpected this is the ticket to safe gun handling number three fire only when you are sure of your target shooting at a target with no knowledge of what lies beyond it can take you a long ways down that road toward trouble and number four never never never stop respecting your firearm and the responsibilities you carry with it hey that's great when are you gonna use it dad's gone for the weekend so i thought i'd go out today you want to come sure why not geez that'd be fun you can take a fall at any time and he'll always be a surprise to you but don't let this surprise be a tragic surprise always check that your safety is on on your firearm and remember that if you do take a spill use the butt of your firearm to break your fall and try to keep in mind that regardless of which way you with a friend in the field while shooting targets let's say and you're passing the gun back and forth make sure the safety is on and the action is open another thing to keep in mind is that when you're passing your gun to your partner make sure that he has a firm grasp on the firearm at this time you both should have muzzle control in mind and remember every time you pick up a firearm you lung i think that he'll need everything we can give him [Applause] and son until you've passed the hunter safety course don't use this gun without me it's so very important that you understand the do fall you can still maintain muzzle control remember that a safety is only a mechanical device and it can fail know where your hunting companions are at all time and remember that if you vary your positions off and on while you're hunting the more chance there is that somebody is going to point a muzzle in somebody else's direction a firearm is a piece of machinery and has no intelligence of its own it's your responsibility to handle it accordingly a firearm demands careful study and must be taken seriously given that respect it can in turn provide hours of enjoyment but substitute a
