Description: Traces the history and death of the Chicago Stockyards through commentary by union leaders of the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, meat company officials, and those who worked under the conditions characterized in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Observes that economic forces are bringing an end to the workplace that provided jobs for many Lithuanians, Irish, Poles, Germans, blacks, and Latin Americans. Reviews the struggle for unionization, the history of broken strikes, and the role of women and blacks in rejuvenating the struggle and invigorating the union leadership.
