Subjects Textile industry. Textile workers. Baseball teams--United States. Content Description Print of short documentary film made from Walter S. Montgomery's films at Startex Mills. Scenes of mill workers and machinery making cloth towels, women on staircase outside mill building, Startex Mills' cloth room, textile mill workers' baseball game, dinner for mill workers, shots of men by construction. Thomas Geddings Roche, a mill supervisor, appears in the film at 11:01. His wife Betty Crawford Roche is at 3:55 and their son at 3:50 and 5:00. Roche worked at numerous textile mills in South Carolina as a supervisor and later vice president and plays an important role in the history of textiles in the South and South Carolina in particular. Montgomery Collection Collection Description This film collection consists of 173 films shot by Walter S. Montgomery, Sr. of Spartanburg, South Carolina from c.1926 to 1987. The collection contains 108 16mm films, 15 8mm films, and 50 Super 8mm films. The films cover a wide range of subjects, and many have comprehensive lists on the cans of the people and events depicted. Many are family films covering birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and graduations. Others cover hunting and fishing trips with friends, as well as vacations and travel. Several films depict life and work in Startex Mills, and trips to various countries in Europe and Asia concerning the textile business. The Montgomery family donated the collection to William Richardson of South Carolina ETV. Richardson would then donate the collection to MIRC in 2012.
