Description: Made for the home market, this "Sport Beams" film "Touchdown Thrills of 1948" was released by Official Films. Narrated by sportscaster Mel Allen, it features college football highlights including play by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Purdue, North Carolina vs. Texas, Penn State vs. Pennsylvania, Southern Methodist vs. Texas, Army vs. Stanford, Harvard vs. Yale, and Notre Dame vs. Northwestern. Surprisingly, the film does not show Michigan or Clemson, both of which finished the 1948 college football season unbeaten and untied. Notre Dame, second in the AP Poll, tied USC 14–14 at the end of the regular season, but did not participate in any bowl per university policy at the time. Northwestern beat California 20–14 in the Rose Bowl, and Clemson defeated Missouri by a point in the Gator Bowl. Narrator Mel Allen was best known for his long tenure as the primary play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees. During the peak of his career in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, Allen was arguably the most prominent member of his profession, his voice familiar to millions.
