Based on the short story by Jesse Stuart., While attempting to catch a lizard on a class biology outing, David, along with two other boys, unintentionally breaks a limb off a cherry tree. The son of a poor farming couple, David must stay after school to work off his debt. This angers his father who sets off, with pistol in hand, to teach David's teacher a lesson. Instead, he learns the importance of education.
