Description: Chronicles the history of Tejano music beginning with contemporary American sounds and flashing back to traveling musicians a century ago. Emphasizes the centrality of the button accordian to the music, relfecting both a Mexican heritage and the influence of German/Texas immigrants. Stresses the importance of identity in the music, that of being nationally American and culturally Mexican. Brings several recordings, photographs and television images to the telling of the story of how the musical style changed and was influenced by popular trends in the larger culture.
