Presents a period of ten hours during which Wayne, a 21-year-old black living in New York City, talks at length about a variety of topics, including his use of heroin and why he won't become addicted. Shows Wayne four months later as he is preparing to leave New York. Points out that his physical deterioration and depressed attitude show a marked change in contrast to his former confidence in his ability to use heroin without becoming addicted.
