Sid Laverents - NOLA - Original Master Tape from Multiple SIDosis

This is Sid Laverents' original master working tape for his recording of "Nola" as featured in his film "Multiple SIDosis." I acquired this tape directly from Sid's estate several years back, along with the original Roberts 770X tape recorder that it was recorded on, which was also featured in the film. I also acquired several other props from the film, including his Shure microphone and Mickey Mouse ears, seen in the photo in this video. Sid added his own labels to the input knobs of the Roberts deck sometime after he made the film. As you can see, they go to 11, years before Spinal Tap! On this tape, you can hear Sid's music in higher fidelity than what eventually made it onto the film. It's also in stereo, though this was likely more of a by-product of the technique he used to record it. He used the "Sound On Sound" feature of the Roberts deck to bounce back and forth between the two available tracks on the deck, overdubbing a new part each time. It's a very primitive and precarious way of recording, as you're required to mix as you go, and record over previously dubbed recordings with each new take! I haven't counted exactly how many different musical parts there are, but it's quite a few. It's surprising that you can still hear the metronome, which was the very first track laid down. This tape, along with other tapes and media I also rescued from Sid's estate, are currently being held in the UCLA Film & Television Archives.
