Description: Recounts the events of the civil war which led to the conversion of the captured gunboat Merrimac into an iron-armored ship; with which the Confederacy hoped to break the Union blockade. Tells in some detail how Captain John Ericsson, first consulted about similarily converting the Galena for the Union, convinced Union leaders that an entirely new type of fighting ship was needed. The resulting Monitor's shakedown cruise was interrupted for the history-making encounter with the Merrimac at Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862.
