SCHLEY RIDE TO ACAPULCO

Year Published: 1950s

Format: 16mm

Description: This travelogue film was created by Norman Schley, a gifted filmmaker from Wisconsin who made a series of travelogues he called "Schley Rides". Many of his films aired on television; others were shown to audiences in settings like club meetings and in auditoriums. This particular TV special from the 1950s takes viewers to Acapulco. Acapulco is a tourism hot spot in Mexico which became popular in the 1950’s and 60’s. This film; as many of his other narrated films do, opens with an advertisement for F.R. Dengel Co. wholesale hardware suppliers (:32) based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Some of their products offered are shown including the E Z Kleen Air Filters (:39) and Valdura Zone Marking Paint (:46). A sales representative from an unnamed company shows their employees using the EZ Kleen air filters (1:14) as well as the Valdura Zone Marking Paint (1:18). The film then turns to Acapulco (1:58). The coastline of the city is viewed from a boat on the water (2:01). Modern vehicles roll through the main drag (2:25) as a local hotel stands nearby. The Acapulco Cathedral (2:30) precedes some of the narrow one-way streets which characterize the area (2:36). Native women carry woven baskets atop their heads (2:41) as young girl trots alongside. Palms line the urban streets as mountains rim the town (3:15). The famed hotel, Hotel Las Americas (3:25) is offered among many other hotels for vacationer lodgings. A map points to it’s location on the Acapulco Bay (3:30). A clear shot of the hotel follows (3:35). Tourists often shipped their cars on freighters to use them while on vacation. A vehicle moves down a long winding road through the hilly mountainside (3:42). The colonial Spanish architecture of the hotel is pointed to (4:04). The camera pans downwards to show the large salt water pool offered to guests (4:09). A vacationer wanders up to the camera equipped with a smile and straw hat (4:21). Tourists apply sunscreen poolside (4:32). A newlywed couple takes a double dive into the waters (4:44). The sandy shoreline is rimmed with sunbathers (5:18). A mountain range rises in the background as the camera moves over to a modern highway (5:59). A house follows which had been carved out from solid rock of the cliff (6:05). The golf course shown had been converted from an airfield (6:13). The former home of the American film star, Esther Williams appears at (6:30). Notable films of Esther’s include ‘Million Dollar Mermaid’ and ‘Bathing Beauty’. The Hotel Club de Pesca is known to be a fisherman’s paradise (6:36). Native fishermen string lines along the water (6:46). A fleet of trim boats for hire (7:06) bob in the waters. A photographer is captured shooting images of the fishermen and their catches (8:03). The ‘morning beach’ is pointed to on a map which gets the most sunlight in the early hours of the day (8:24). The world-famous Hotel Mirador sits on the Pacific coastline (9:16). The hotel is built into the face of the cliff and lined by a series of cottages (9:19). Young native boys climb up a rocky cliff overlooking the shoreline (9:54). They carry batches of oysters which will be served at the hotel restaurant pictured at (9:58). A high dive is captured from the cliff to the waters below (10:43). The film begins to wrap up with images of tourists boarding a passenger plane to return home (12:28) as well as images of natives (12:42). The film concludes with an advertisement for F.R. Dengel Co. products (12:51).

so i always buy from the fr dangle company at 1114 north 4th street milwaukee i know they've been suppliers to industry for over 65 years this is acapulco the famous resort city on the southern coast of mexico that plays holiday host of thousands of vacationing americans every year it's a cozy little playground nestling on a strip of land between the bay of acapulco and the pacific ocean many of its sparkling white futuristic buildings are smarter newer and much more practical in some of our own in the united states like all mexican cities it has a closet the main drag or village square and the ever-present birthmark of mexican village is culture its cathedral every mexican town has a cathedral and plenty of narrow one-way street no sloppy jeans for the high school girls but the older element hangs onto the old flavor of old mexico traveling tots and tote baskets and the young element with the old flavor parades the square with a basket of vegetable wear in spite of modern supermarkets nearby soon after the philippine islands were discovered acapulco became the port of entry for rich porcelains silks and other goods from east india and destined for spanish viceroys at mexico city streets are well paved very neat and clean and the mountains ring the town but who stays in town on a vacation tour our sleigh ride starts at the famous hotel de los america a well-known resort on the bay at the tip of the western finger of land just 10 minutes from the center of acapulco on the heights overlooking both the bay and the pacific ocean many tourists ship their cars down on freighters from the states and then start driving from here on their overland tour it's less than 300 miles from mexico city a full day's drive over well-paved winding mountain goads but only an hour and 15 minutes by air it's the hollywood stars happy winter playground [Music] the main hotel building is colonial spanish architecture its big salt water pool is 275 feet above sea level the hotel is run on the american plan with rates including all meals and the periphery the gracious greeting of a native mexican host complete with straw hat as he animals up to extend the welcome oh the lid is off and that georgie chappelle was hiding in american joker the temperature here runs between 75 and 78 degrees all year round and because acapulco is almost completely ringed with mountains it lies in a sheltered area that's well protected from strong wind here's one half of a newly wet honeymooning couple taking off ooh el saraco on the northern shore of the bay and the afternoon beach called the hornel el saraco is one of the area's nice spots the mountain ring surrounding the bay keeps the air mild and mellow and it keeps the water constantly calm affording complete protection from the elements actually there are many inlets coals and smaller bays within octopus bay now this is the afternoon beach for tourists so the natives take over in the morning obviously it's called the afternoon beach because the sun is higher here in the afternoon and the tourists always follows the sun [Music] the native boys grab their funds under no sun while they can the republic of mexico maintains a naval base on the eastern peninsula across the bay you're not allowed in there with camera gear so we reached across with a telephoto lens mainly to establish it without revealing detail most of mexico is a series of mountains and plateaus so the well-to-do residents who choose a home site often wind up building their house into the solid rock of sheer cliffs there used to be an airport here between the road and the shoreline now it's a golf course resort owners know that american tourists on the prowl for something new and different still haul out their golf clubs and yell four and tally ho where's the country club [Music] no that's not it that's film star esther williams home the fisherman's paradise is the hotel club at pesca spanking new and looking like a frosty white seven-layer cake quite luxurious but reasonably priced and right here are some of the finest fishing waters in the world the native boys are always on hand to help trim up the tackle and lures and lay out the bait and in between customers they hit the drink for a cooling swim they spend almost as much time in or on the water as they do in their own home a neat fleet of trim boats for hire rides an anchor in the bay occasionally you find an old scowl you wouldn't sail in your own bathtub but daily 100 of the boats are top flight completely rigged and outfitted for deep sea fishing with modern tackle and gear included in the rental actually big catches are often made right offshore within sight of the hotels the advantage of fishing in the bay is that the beautifully calm water keeps you from getting seasick so you have more time to fish and you can reel them in almost as fast as you can cast your line wonderful fishing here and the deep sea fishing out beyond the bay produces many marine specimens sail sailfish striped tuna spanish mackerel barracudas swordfish giant batarae marlin yellowtails silk and red snappers 600 pound marlins are common and if your friends don't believe you there's always a man handy who can provide you with the pictorial proof the photographer so we shoot him while he shoots the fishermen who bring back a nice catch of tropical sailfish now we just whip out the photo and say measure it yourself here tiz [Music] on a sheltered little bay on the western side is the morning beach or the coletta there are four modern hotels flooding right on the beach nothing stingy about our mexican hosts a beach for the morning and the beach for the afternoon and more than 50 hotels in the area just to be sure you'll find at least one to fit your pocketbook and of course these serapa peddlers [Music] all the conveniences of home on the beach including the mexican babysitter hi there little lady [Music] across the narrow strip of land flaming the bay right on the pacific coastline is the world famous el mirador a fabulous hotel built into the face of the cliff with a series of guest cottages surrounding it all facing the ocean [Music] el mirador features american beds american plumbing and american food [Music] and their menu features wild duck goose and other foul plentiful in the area and fresh seafood and abundance now we'll see a special delivery of that these boys climb the cliff while the pilot rides and anchor the rough surf prevents gawking but the rough stones don't prevent the lads from legging it up the cliff in their bare feet to deliver a batch of oysters that have been caught only moments ago the guests eat at alfresco tables near the cliff edge or in the main dining room and those oysters on the half shell couldn't be much fresher now could they and coming right up out of the pacific ocean into the steaming cauldrons of the kitchen the delivery completed the boys tackle the dangerous task of embarking from the sharp rocks in the pounding surf the burlap bag is empty their swimming trunks have no pockets so where do they keep the money don't know anyway mission completed and now for the world famous high dive from the cliff to the churning boiling below the professional diver will check the wind current so he can time his dangerous dive just right he's got to there can be no slip up [Music] he goes over the lower terrace wall and he'll swim the base of the cliff at the right [Music] up the cliff now and his bare feet he's a part of the regular entertainment at el mirador and he makes the dive once each night as the climax to the floor show up on top he makes his way to a crude rock order where he says a prayer before each dive there are just a few of these professional thrill divers in mexico they practice at it for years starting at a few feet then increasing the height till they've reached the peak he's got to make his dive from a ledge below the peak in order to clear the jutting rocks below an american once tried it and was killed he's got the spot now he knows the wind and he knows the tide he's got to hit the water when the swell is just right [Music] and he's got to clear those jagged jutting rocks in this narrow churning gorge or else he's taking a long time getting off on this one it's a long way down now he's poised and leaning slightly forward and there he goes [Music] did he make it yes he made it oh oh what a way to make a living ah but this is acapulco winter home of the hollywood stars year-round playground of a million american tourists who want a taste of life south of the border in bellow mexico who fly the air lanes ride the rails and roll the roads to jam a century of living into a few short weeks away from home our tv sleigh ride takes you
