Description: This color travelogue film was shot by Wisconsin filmmaker Norman Schley in March sometime during the 1950s and offers a first-hand account of Schley’s road trip around Florida’s coastal cities, including Major League Baseball Spring Training in Palm Beach, and then some cities in Alabama. A skilled filmmaker from Wisconsin, Schley made a series of amateur films under the moniker "Schley Ride" and/or "Picturelogue." Some of his films aired on television, while others were shown in front of live audiences. This particular account takes viewers along to explore the sights and wonders of major cities in Florida like St. Augustine, Palm Beach, Miami, and Tallahassee amongst others. While many of Schley Ride films are silent, this film is fully narrated by Norman Schley (and his wife) who offers more details and historical background on the site he is visiting. vacationers have invaded the state of florida to escape the colder northern climate and to enjoy the warm sunshine it's the middle of march you have just filed your income tax returns here's the way wisconsin appears at this time of the year [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you're [Music] and now let's start south through the state of illinois the coal fields of indiana kentucky the bluegrass state tennessee and the huge power dams of the tva alabama the city of birmingham the pittsburgh of the south and into the sunshine state florida our first stop the oldest city in the united states saint augustine on the east coast the oldest city of european origin in the united states having continuous existence is saint augustine stepping ashore with sword and hand the conqueror ponce de leon officially discovered florida in 1513. saint augustine has the layout of a typical 16th century spanish colonial town one of the requisites was a plaza or park where on the principal buildings would face the castillo was started in 1672 and it has 16 foot thick walls this fort remarkably well preserved is an excellent example of spanish renaissance fortification the city gates the stone pillars are the only visible remains of the 18th century town wall this orange grove on san marco avenue is one of the nation's oldest blooded orange groves in a beautiful setting of moth hung oak so [Music] this was the home of henry flagler whose vision brought the great hotels of the 1880s the extension of the railroad and the opening of the entire florida east coast memorial presbyterian church was built by flagler in 1890 to memorialize his daughter the flagler mausoleum adjoins the church this is the ponce de leon hotel built by henry flagler in the 1880s [Music] so [Music] this is the oldest house in the united states [Music] we leave saint augustine going east over the bridge of lions [Music] from saint augustine we travel down the east coast of florida through daytona beach fort pierce and our next stop palm beach where the gulf stream nearly touches the east coast of florida in palm beach florida this is royal palm way [Music] world's famous sailfish fleet [Music] here we are at the philadelphia athletics training camp their spring training camp in west palm beach florida let's go inside and meet some of the players [Music] hey hey i can read your lips boy right now [Music] hey [Music] taking off three pounds [Music] hey just while you're uh last round for you fellas it's only one o'clock hello fellas if i was running run as much as you can the running does you six times more good when you're tired as it is when you start in after you get through pitching right around the park four or five times as much as you can take the first week and then after that do you sprint you can't get too much running the greatest thing for your arm [Music] easter sunrise services in palm beach [Music] in every action of his life we see the strongest and we recognize continually that the son of man was a man in every sense of the word intellectual his mind was clear [Music] [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] [Music] dignified australian pine on wells road the beginning of millionaires row [Music] [Music] the towers for many years inhabited by a atwater kent is today the estate of railroad magnate robert a young and mrs young on several occasions hosts to the duke and duchess of windsor [Music] caribbean and the ocean a home made popular by holiday magazines hotel palm beach plaza [Music] [Music] testa's restaurant on royal panciana way palm beach florida the oldest and one of the most popular restaurants in palm beach often amateur bands come to serenade the customers [Music] the annual regatta on lake worth at palm beach attracts all sizes of outboard boats hydroplanes and other types of racing craft [Music] [Music] leaving palm beach it's a leisurely drive to miami and miami beach miami and now out along the tamiami trail through coral gables and out along the tamiami trail [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] seminole indian villages along the tamiami trail [Music] [Applause] [Music] hmm [Music] so [Music] water hyacinth [Music] through the everglades off the west coast to fort myer the winter home of the late thomas edison to pontagorda on charlotte harbor hotel charlotte harbor gorda florida [Music] mickey gillard swimming instructor and professional hotel charlotte harbor punta gorda ready [Applause] so leaving pontigorda we travel northward and soon have an opportunity to save several miles of travel and enjoy a ride across tampa bay on a ferry to saint petersburg [Music] st petersburg florida settled in the 1870s [Music] petersburg we continue up the west coast to the famous tarpon springs [Music] florida world's largest exchange [Music] flat level country and good roads our next stop rainbow garden north from tarpon springs here is rainbow springs the beautiful springs located between dunlon and williston [Music] let's walk down along the flower edged walks and get into a submarine provided with portholes in this way we'll explore the bottom of rainbow springs one of the colored guides will describe our trip to us in poetry form we are now at rainbow spring and the submarine boat of a nautilus looking at the rainbow garden now that tall slender vegetation with the long leaves on it that's what we call waterlogger and the green kind you see on the bottom that's what we call the copper scraps and the large fish with the black stripe lengthway down inside that's a big mouth calico bath there's many other variety vegetations and the rainbow river that i will give to you by name rainbow spring and the submarine borders in northern looking at the beautiful rainbow color that flashes across the bottom of the rain forever while we get our names and colors while we call it rainbow spring that beautiful color flashes on the bottom whether the sunshine or whether it rains any hour today you can find the same beautiful color flashing across the bottom of the rainbow river that's a beautiful spot to look on through the clay bridge to water and the beautiful vegetation the fish there with the stripes around his body that's a brilliant and salt water they call that a sheep here they fish with the golden fence and the shark potted mouth the father man call them shiners georgia man calls them roaches texas man call them golden cops while the northern man call them shad that's direct for shiner that we use when we're going out the fish for bear and the big mouth calico bass is the one that got the black stripe length way down his side that stands there looking like a prize fight in the son of a rain every once in a while makes that quick dash and tried to take one of those snails knowing those brown just like a heavyweight prize found i'm trying to make a knockout blow in the son of a rank we are now looking on the horseshoe cave one of the largest floors single floors in the world and the bottom of the horse in the rainbow river horseshoe cave napo right there was 25 000 gallons of water every minute comes rolling up one to the first paint drop and makes a total from each spring 50 000 gallons now poke those frames keep this river flowing and this river flow nine miles south of here she opt into the good roads continue to the state capital of florida tallahassee state capitol tallahassee florida [Music] from tallahassee to apalachicola and our first view of the gulf of mexico [Music] we've been around the country perth and boy's bright and bright and all right but
