Description: An episode of the National Education Television series, "Creative Person", which was broadcast the week of November 17, 1968. This program was made during the last two weeks of August, 1966. The program begins with Ray arriving home in Calcutta from the Berlin Film Festival where he has just served on the jury. During the long drive to Calcutta, he describes the city, compares it to many Western cities, and explains why he wants to remain and work there. The film explores the many aspects of Satyajit Ray and shows him, not only as India’s most distinguished film director, but also as writer, composer, and designer. He is seen at work both in the film studio and on location. Many of Ray’s long-time co-workers appear with him over the years; his cameraman, Subharata Mitra, who has been with him ever since his first film “Panther Panchali.” These associates comment on Ray, how it is to work with him, talk about his methods and style and discuss their own long-standing relationships with him. Throughout the film, Ray comments on his own position as filmmaker, the influence accumulated from Western film directors, and that part of his own particular talent which makes him totally Indian in his expression. Scenes from his film “Charulata” are included in this profile on Ray. He describes the making of this film as well as several others of his outstanding productions.
