Safety: Peril Rides The Road (1978)

[Music] This is Ms. Karen Kingsley. youthful, gifted, attractive, a successful freelance architect who still finds time to serve the children of her community as a volunteer crossing guard. A very special kind of woman, perhaps more special than you can imagine. It was less than a year ago. Karen was returning from a visit to her favorite aunt Margaret in the small township of Springfield. It was here that something took place which gave her extraordinary powers. [Music] We are the Stellen. We wish you only good, Karen Kingsley. To the young people of your world is soon to be given the task of new building. Give them the three keys. Aware, alert, alive. The ring becomes the safety shield which freezes time and space stopping objects in their tracks. The teletaker, which transports objects from one point in space to another instantly. Well, almost an hour till I go on duty. Think I'll catch up on some reading. [Music] I've got that bike safety test today. I sure all my notes are in the auditorium where I left him yesterday. Got to get them before the janitor cleans up this morning. What? What? [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Woo! That was close, Guardiana. Too close, Tommy. Much too close. You know, more than 900 boys and girls of your age lost their lives last year because they weren't alert while crossing the street. Were you aware of the danger, Tommy? >> Well, I knew that there was a mean dog there, and I see that stop sign every morning, but this morning, I guess I was in too much of a hurry. >> We need to get into the right habits, Tommy. So, when emergencies happen, we do the right thing. You remember the rules for safe walking? I know you do. Cross only at the corners, never in the middle of the block. Cross at corners with traffic lights whenever possible. Always cross on a new green light or walk signal, but always look both to the left and right for turning cars before stepping off the curb. Keep to your right in the crosswalk. Never cross at a corner with a car approaching until the car has come to a full stop and you make eye contact with the driver. If you see his eyes, he probably sees yours. Then check the other lanes of traffic from moving or turning vehicles before crossing. And always walk facing the traffic in areas where there are no sidewalks. And pedestrians should wear something light at night so they can be easily seen. >> Good safety habits require practice. >> And to help me remember the rules, I'm going to join the Danger Dodger Club. >> Good. Being alert involves planning ahead to avoid those dangers. And knowing what to do is what keeps us alive. >> I'll try, Guardiana. Good. And now I must go. Danger dodger, I salute you. Aware, alert, alive. [Music] Oh, still plenty of time. Something tells me this is going to be a busy day. I better be early. >> Good morning. >> Hi. >> Hi, Lynn. Come to see us, Maria. Looks like I'm not the only early bird up this morning. Are you going to walk that bike all the way to school in? >> I sure am. That's why I started up so early. This is my brother's old bike. I volunteered to bring it for Mr. Brown's safety test today. >> Mr. Brown says safety begins with a safe bicycle. >> That means before you even get on it, you have to inspect it. >> Really? >> Mr. Brown has a safety checklist. His first rule is put some strain on the chain. It looks like it needs tightening. >> Yeah. >> His next rule is bear down on the brakes. Those brakes look like they need work. Rule number three is test the tires. Good. All firm. Aok. Okay. Next, check the handlebars. >> These are loose. >> They sure are. How about checking the seat? >> The saddle's okay. And my feet reached the pedals. >> Well, now I know why you're walking that bicycle. It's in very poor condition. >> Yeah, like Andrew. He'd be in poor condition if it weren't for Safety Woman. >> Really? What happened? >> Well, last week Andrew was biking home from little league practice and he had so much stuff on his handlebars he couldn't see the road. [Music] [Applause] Andrew, did you forget the rules of the road? A bicycle, like a car, is a vehicle. A clear view is important, so don't overload it. Bicycle riders have to obey all traffic rules just as the drivers of cars do. And you ride your bike on the right hand side of the road with traffic just like the cars. A bicyclist should be able to recognize traffic signs and symbols by their shape and color. But unlike cars, bicycles should be walked across intersections, not ridden. And bike riders should be even more alert than motorists for objects lying in the street. Be sure to keep safe following distances which allow time to stop. And if you ride with a friend, ride in single file, never side by side. Riding defensively is the smart thing to do, Andrew. That means be on the lookout for possible danger ahead of you. Keep an eye on cars which may be ready to pull out, car doors opening, and never insist on the ride of way. Remember, the rules are for your safety. >> I'm going to ride by the rules of the road from now on, Gardiana. >> I'm sure you will, Andrew. Danger dodger, I salute you. You know, safety woman can't be everywhere at once. Andrew was very lucky. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, he was. Let's go see if Sus is ready yet. Do we have time? >> At least 15 minutes. Never go towards the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the bus driver has opened the door. Be polite and orderly when boarding the bus and when taking your seats. >> Remain quietly in your seat while the bus is moving. Head and hands safely inside the bus. Always follow the directions of your bus driver and be especially careful about traffic when leaving the bus and on your way home. So practice your bus safety skills.
