Description: Research on the stimulation of the hypothalamus in cats. In Part 1, stimulation induces dramatic motor and sympathetic manifestations of "sham rage," but behavior is stereotyped and stimulus-bound. In Part 2, environmental stimuli associated as many as 480 times with "sham rage" reactions could not be conditioned to induce true affective states. Concludes that the hypothalamus may integrate the efferent pathways of affective expression, but that it does not serve as a source of "drive" or as a "center" of emotion. J.H. Masserman.
