Complete Record: Rocks are everywhere around us, and they are interesting to study. We might collect rocks and group them in many ways: by texture, hardness or color, or by the way the rocks were formed or the materials they contain. Rocks are mixtures of chemicals that have very definite forms and compositions. These chemicals are called minerals. Minerals often have distinctive crystal shapes. The shapes of rocks and the patterns of minerals in them are determined by the way in which the rocks were formed: 1)by the cooling of molten rock (igneous rock), 2)by sedimentation (sedimentary rock), or 3)by extreme pressure and temperature (metamorphic rock). In this film, demonstrations of crystal growing and rock tumbling reinforce nature photographs to explain rocks and minerals.
