Description: Traces the history of England from the Norman invasion to the crowning of John I in 1199 during which time the king gained increasing power. Describes the conditions in the country and contributions toward central government of William the Conqueror, Henry I, Stephen of Blois, Henry II, and Richard the Lionhearted. Points out the issues of conflict between the king and the noblemen over the usurpation of their privileges of local government by the crown and how this led to the signing of the Magna Carta.
