Description: Presents pioneer works by two artists, Viking Eggeling and Hans Richter, who first made the transition from abstract painting to abstract film. Includes Eggeling's Diagonal Symphony, which moves hieroglyphic forms along an invisible diagonal, and Richter's Rhythm 21, which orchestrates the squares and rectangles of the film and screen. Produced 1921-24. , Rhythmus 21 is Hans Richter's first film made simultaneously with Eggeling's Symphonie Diagonale. In the former, Richter experiments with square forms which appear in simple to complex compositions. Viking Eggeling was concerned with visual analogs to musical compositions. In Symphonie Diagonale, he creates a feeling of orchestration and rhythm through graphic alternations and variations on a theme.
